Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, of England, is enthusiastic about returning to Trinidad and Tobago, according to Eric Jenkinson, High Commissioner for Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Her Majesty and His Royal Highness, Prince Phillip, The Duke of Edinburgh, will pay a State visit to this country during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) from November 26-28.
’Her Majesty knows Trinidad and Tobago very well, she remembers it with a lot of enthusiasm and she is looking forward to renewing that relationship,’ Jenkinson said.
He was speaking at a dinner for diplomats-which provided a forum for member states to engage in light discussions on issues expected to be addressed at CHOGM-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the Carlton Savannah on Monday evening.
Jenkinson said the Queen’s attendance was two-fold because she will also be visiting this country in her capacity as the Head of the Commonwealth.
Activities planned for the State visit, apart from the official CHOGM programme, include the laying of a wreath at the cenotaph in Memorial Park, Port of Spain; the viewing of floral and craft exhibits and participating in a cultural youth rally at Queen’s Hall, Port of Spain.
President George Maxwell Richards and Dr Jean Ramjohn-Richards will host a State dinner on the occasion of the royal couple’s visit.
This will be the third State visit by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip to Trinidad and Tobago. Their previous visits were during the period February 7-9, 1966 and November 1-3, 1985.
In her capacity as Head of the Commonwealth of Nations, Queen Elizabeth II will deliver the keynote address at CHOGM’s opening ceremony on November 27.
