Murder suspect leads police team to weapon

THE cutlass which is believed to have been used to kill a Toco businessman and his employee on Monday was found by homicide detectives yesterday.

Homicide detectives investigating the double murder were yesterday taken to the exact location of the cutlass by a suspect who is currently in police custody.

Businessman Sookdeo Manohar, 76, and his 56-year-old employee, Sonny Valentine, were attacked at Manohar’s Cumana, Toco, home at daybreak on Monday.

Valentine died inside the house.

Manohar died on the roadway of the Toco Main Road while on his way to seek help from a police sergeant who lived across the road.

Both men received chop wounds to their heads.

Following the cutlass attack a former neighbour of Manohar was seen running away from the scene of the crime.

The suspect attempted to seek refuge at a family member’s home but was instead handed over to homicide detectives in Arouca.

Apart from taking investigating officers to where the cutlass was thrown, the 28-year-old suspect also allegedly gave a signed confession to the killings.

He told investigating officers the murder was motivated by robbery.

Manohar was the area’s lone transporter of cooking gas and the area’s biggest money-lender.

He also cashed pension cheques for the area’s aged.

Manohar always made bank deposits every Monday and month-end Mondays were his biggest pay day, neighbours claimed.

The file into the double murder is expected to be taken to acting Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Roger Gaspard today.

Ladies and Gentlemen, The senseless murder of a man who is fondly remembered by his Village as a Great Philantropist and 'Financial Advisor' must not be forgotten. Trinidad and Tobago is now seeing a breakdown in its Society's respect for each other, fuelled by greed, drugs and lack of dicipline. We need to educate and dicipline our young people now! We cannot expect the Teachers to deal with our dysfunctional children, 'Charity' begins at home! We are experiencing the epidemic breakdown of the Family Unit as we know it, with single parents just barely holding it together, never mind dicipline or setting a good example! All is not lost, however, the human mind is a wonderful thing. We need to lead by example, fire the people in authority who are not setting a good example and let's get back to the old values that set us apart from the rest of the Caribbean! Certant Omnes.
