Muslims: Let top cop apologise

’Raymond Craig, Deputy Commissioner of Police, is not who we want an apology from, we want it from the Commissioner of Police,’ says Imtiaz Mohammed, chairman of the Muslims of Trinidad and Tobago organisation.

Although Craig has taken ’full responsibility for what has transpired’during what has been termed ’the unwarranted questioning’ of Saudi Arabian diplomat Fawaz Abdul Rahman Alshubaili on Monday evening, Mohammed has said the community never requested an apology from him. He said Craig in fact is only adding insult to injury by ’trying to down-play what occurred and sweep their (the police’s) actions under the rug’.

On Tuesday night, Mohammed told the Express the police interrogated Alshubaili for close to an hour, made him take off his shirt and searched his possessions during their visit to his hotel room on Monday.

Mohammed said while some members of the Muslim community did express solidarity with the national police service at a press conference yesterday, saying the situation is being ’blown out of proportion’, he knows differently. He said Craig’s version of the events which say Alshubaili was in fine spirits when he left the country are ’false.’ He also said the man was not simply asked a few questions as Craig is stating.

’From what he told us, he was interrogated and the police did not treat him kindly,’ Mohammed said.

He said he spoke to the foreign diplomat, who was here to issue Saudi Arabian visas to local Muslims wanting to make the Holy Pilgrimage to Mecca this year, before he left on Tuesday, and the man ’was visibly shaken and upset’.

’He was very angry, annoyed,’ said Mohammed.

Mohammed said when members of the Muslim community enquired from persons in the Ministry of National Security about the complaints that led the police to Alshubaili’s room at the Hyatt in the first place, some were told the police went there because they had gotten reports that persons dressed in ’Muslim garb’ had been visiting a man staying there, who also had ’40 passports and a photocopying machine’.

Muslims and Apology Posted: 2009-11-04 9:43:00 PM
Why should the Commissioner of police of this country apologise to a low level diplomat for doing his job? This is absolute madness! Are now subject to the laws and discretion of the state of Saudi Arabia? When country is no longer a theocracy and women in that country have equal rights, then Muslims in this country can complain about the treatment of of a Saudi national. This is an absolute disgrace and to what end??
Apology Posted: 2009-11-04 11:37:00 PM
It will be a national shame to make any police authority apologize for doing their job.I don't know who these "muslims" in Trinidad and Tobago think they are, but the police is paid to protect all of the people and not some of the people. They did their job and that's the end of it....let them muslims go to hell with their demands.
Diplomat Wrong Posted: 2009-11-04 11:23:00 PM
While I have no doubt that the Police can over exercise their authority at times, I do believe that the diplomat was ill advised to be handing out visas as if it was nuts and Channa. Was a notice placed in the newspapers? Did any of the Muslim Organizations notify the public that this issuance of visas was going to be held at the Hyatt? Lack of Protocol by all it seemed.
LET TOP COP APOLOGISE Posted: 2009-11-05 03:16:00 AM
What the fuss muslim brothers? the Police was just doing there jobs.A diplomatic dont come in one country and stay in a Hotel to give out Visas to people. There is a protocol to go through. he should get in touch with the our forien Ministry. GL
Let top cop apologize Posted: 2009-11-05 00:46:00 AM
These people have a lot of nerve asking for the top cop to apologize . First of all, Visas should have been given out at at office and not at a hotel. We would have been thrown under the jail had we done this in Saudia Arabia, so why should they come to our shores and break our laws. Apology, I say no apology, becaus the police were doing their jobs.
Choose your bandwagons carefully! Posted: 2009-11-04 11:39:00 PM
It is interesting that a Muslim organizations would jump into the fray over the questioning of a Saudi Diplomat and raise it as a Muslim issue. Think back to 9 years ago... The hijackers of the planes of 9/11, 15 of the 19 were Saudis, and all were Muslim. The terrorists of 1990 what were they? Not Muslim? I am happy that the police at least have the fortitude to be proactive in this case, the Queen is coming and the last thing we would want in hindsight is to wonder why the police was not on the ball. To those out there making the fuss, I wish to ask, is this a diplomatic issue, a Muslim issue or is it a Saudi issue?
Diplomat Posted: 2009-11-05 04:58:00 AM
It is so unfortunate that this respected man has been the subject of such disgraceful behaviour by the police service in Trinidad. Is it solely because he is a Muslim or is it that he is from the Middle East? Don't we have a number of non-muslims engaging in behaviours worse than this? It is so unfortunate that Muslims have to undergo this type of treatment regardless of place and their status.
Muslims Posted: 2009-11-05 06:34:00 AM
Is a man's hotel room not his temporary home? And therefore do police not need to have a search warrant to search it, without his permission. How pathetic that foreigners get treated the same way taxpayers do.
Muslims Demand Apology by CoP Posted: 2009-11-05 05:31:00 AM
The ministry of national security has a responsibility to investigate any action that may lead to a security breach be local or foreign and the officers of the law should be allowed to do their jobs without any hinderance by the public. aj london
T & T first Posted: 2009-11-05 07:35:00 AM
Do anyone remember that the majority of the terrorist from the 9/11 in the USA was from and supported by Saudi Arabia, have they apoligised to the world their continued support or try to justify it, I'll bet that if this same activity was taking place in any US city that diplomat would still be to this date being interogated.
What a bunch of hyprocrites Posted: 2009-11-05 06:19:00 AM
So it is only wrong to search Muslims now? How come the Muslim community did not cry out in anger when other persons are pull aside and searched? Everyday lots of people are pull aside in the airport. Or i get it now, a Muslim Diplomat is more important than another human. Is that what a certain section of the Muslim community is saying??? If the police got a complaint and they had to investigate I am sure they did it in the best way possible. It seems there was NO abusive language used and NO use of force. Tell me how much better you want it? Stop your immature complaining. The Muslims who are complaining are nor real Muslims. Real Muslims are intelligent. You all are shaming the Billions of Muslims around the world. Get real.
NO APOLOGY Posted: 2009-11-05 06:27:00 AM
What a joke !!!!!!! Mohammed aren't you taking this thing to far? There are more important crisis in the country.
apology my foot Posted: 2009-11-05 08:09:00 AM
This is our country and our national security comes first before anything else. This is the western world where police are there to protect and serve the people of our island, when visiting here you must abide by our democratically elected authorities as we would have to accept what ever they do to us when we go to their country.
Apologise for what? Posted: 2009-11-05 01:47:00 AM
Listen, Saudi Arabia Muslims are known terrorism. Therefore, when unknown persons form that country enters T & T for diplomatic purposes they should of conducted their business through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The police should of haul the Saudi alien down to central and conduct their police business there. What Raymond Craig did was to accommidate the Saudi individual. To say the lease, had this Saudi person entered the United Sataes of America to hand out visas as he did this week in Trinidad, the FBI would be water boarding his behind right now.
Controversy Posted: 2009-11-05 08:22:00 AM
Could it be that he was issuing the visas at his hotel room because they do not have an embassy here?
MUSLIMS ANGER Posted: 2009-11-05 07:07:00 AM
stand up for injustices .Do not let this racism towards muslims reach our island . muslims have always supported our country and our leaders. our contribution must not be overlooked. sometimes dear muslims you have to take a stand. Do like sat make some noise because if you don't it will certinly get worst.
T+T police Posted: 2009-11-05 07:11:00 AM
What do you want?We are third world. Our police is third world also. Please excuse our incompetense.Craig or philbert or Manning for that matter are all hiding behind third world mentality.
Muslims: Let top cop apologise Posted: 2009-11-05 08:54:00 AM
Please get some perspective. In this trying time of terrorism everybody coming into TT for business or pleasure must expect some degree of questioning. Terrorist don't stay put, they travel and reek havoc on people's lives. I'm not saying the diplomat is a terrorist but he must expect that diplomat or not he will be subjected to immigration control measures to safeguard TT. If this was not happening I would be very worried. Stop making what should now be routine in many countries now thanks to terrorism a matter of ethnicity. Has the diplomat travelled to the USA and the UK recently? If he has he should not expect any less in TT.
SAUDI DIPLOMAT Posted: 2009-11-05 07:51:00 AM
Issuing Visa should be not done in the Hotel, it should be done in thier Embassy. Why should the Top Cop apologise to Mr.Mohammed or any one. The Cop is doing their job to protect us from Terroist today. If the Saudi want to complain they can sent their complaint to T&T Gov't. Trini- NJ USA
Muslims: Let top cop apologise Posted: 2009-11-05 04:30:00 AM
I support the police in this action. Why was a person distributing passports from a hotel room and not a conference room with the proper security measures in place for such a valuable document. Give us the whole story to make a proper judgement.
Re: Muslims: Let top cop apologise Posted: 2009-11-05 5:19:00 PM
No need to apologise the police just did their job.
jamerson Posted: 2009-11-05 08:07:00 AM
It's quite amazing, the biggest treat to this country in terms of safety is not from foreigners (Saudi officials etc) BUT from our own people (from Laventille etc), crime, drugs, and guns!!
Muslims: let top cop apologise Posted: 2009-11-05 08:22:00 AM
The police have got every right to search and question or if it comes to it, interogate the people in question, an hotel room to conduct vias? leave it out!! the police got nothing to apologise for, they could have arranged to use another country's embassy. A Trini in London
Oh please Posted: 2009-11-05 09:03:00 AM
So what if he was questioned, they were doing there job. You know if this was a real security situation and the police did nothing, you all will condemn them for not checking, damm if you do damm if you don't
Apology. Posted: 2009-11-05 04:33:00 AM
Saudi Arabia is amoungst the most unfair and oppressive countries in the world with respect to the treatment of foreign nationals. I have lived and worked there for two years. Had that level of suspicion fallen upon anyone visiting the Kingdom, he or she would still be in jail with no explanation or representation. This Saudi gentleman deserves no apology from anyone.
Let Top Cop apologize. Posted: 2009-11-05 06:21:00 AM
Apologize for what? Why was Mr. Alshubaili issuing visas from a hotel room? Is this the norm? Does the US Embassy issue passports from a hotel room or from their office in POS. Somebody is hiding something. Brenda, Edmonds, WA
**** Muslims ,people have jobs to do**** Posted: 2009-11-05 11:27:00 AM
Were you in Manhattan on 9/11? Where were you?
Are they Trinis. or not Posted: 2009-11-05 05:17:00 AM
If they are Trinis. why don't they apologise for their fellow country men, police or not. If they aren', why don't they just shut their XY&Z.
What is all the fuss about!! Posted: 2009-11-05 12:28:00 AM
This is where the Express should have used the above caption. The Muslim community is outraged that the local police did their job. What utter foolishness and to top it off, the man who conducted the search / interrogation is not qualified to apologise. I agree with that part since he had no reason to apologise. Information reached the authorities that some foreigner was handed out visas at the HYATT. In this smartman country and smartman season, the police acted and acted swiftly. Good for them, I applaud them. I am seeing some improvements to the time when they "had no vehicles" to respond to reports of this kind. That the man is a diplomat does not say anything. Diplomats over the years have been known to be involved in smuggling illegal items in diplomatic pouches etc so where is the reason for the police to think that the man is holier than anyone. In this country I seem to vaguely remember some incident with a diplomat from either an African country or South America who was searched and illegal stuff found in his possession at the Airport. Diplomatic immunity was correctly violated then, so there is a precedent. If the information received had proven to be correct an the police had not acted, what a blow that would have been. Times gone by there were reports of people who were lining up to pay money to employment agencies, or cruise ship recruitment reps, only for people torealise too late that they were fleeced. Again, Kudos to the police for their quick response and to the offended party - now that you have been cleared, a sincere apology from all of us. You are not above the law! richard_stevens P.O.S.
Apologise for what Posted: 2009-11-05 07:47:00 AM
The Muslims in Trinidad are full of themselves ,Saudi Arabia has a history of human rights, a little search and they cry foul. that should have been here in the United States. Also quite a few terrorists are know to be Saudis. Boo hoo.
Are you kidding? Posted: 2009-11-05 2:37:00 PM
Never! It will be a burning shame for the Commissioner to apologize. That will be the saddest day for Trinbago. You will be playing right into the hands of these people. That will be all they want then WHAT? I am asking ALL IN AUTHORITY to be very careful, very careful with those people. How dare they utterly disrespect our country. Additionally, the nationals of T&T ought to be ashamed of themselves. I find that they should all migrate to the Middle East for all I care. MAINTAIN YOUR STAND Mr. Commissioner. Stand tall!!
GOOD FOR ALL Posted: 2009-11-05 2:39:00 PM
No one is innocent weather they be ministers, police oficers, diplomats . If we are citizens and we hardly have rights in our own country why should it be different for any foreigner who come here. Police did a VERY GOOD job.. Everyone should be treated equally . Now its time to JAIL some ministers in this country....
Muslims Let CoP Apologise Posted: 2009-11-05 09:04:00 AM

Bigotry Towards Muslims Posted: 2009-11-05 09:08:00 AM
It is amazing to see the level of bigotry purported here by readers. Its clear that the Police bungled it from the start, but then again they are only reflecting the widespread anti-muslim sentiments in trinidad. Just read the posts here...
Sad state at trinidad...nothing to do with diplomacy Posted: 2009-11-05 09:31:00 AM
I am appalled as well...it is not that this person was a muslim...let us for once think that if this person was from the Vatican or Israel, these comments might have been expressed differently..the point is that in order for someone to be a diplomat, you must have met some form of international standards..and the police did not do enough background work anyways...2020 my foot
no apology for doing the right thing Posted: 2009-11-05 2:39:00 PM
i would have called the police too if i see a saudi arabian room being visited by heavy traffic of people wearing muslim gear. it is THE REALITY OF THE WORLD WE LIVE IN SINCE 2001. PICK ANOTHER PLACE to do your passport distribution, because it looks like they planning something.
Muslims Posted: 2009-11-05 09:42:00 AM
Were they not the ones with outside support who turned our country upsidedown with their revolution?--try to pull that off in Saudi Arabia - no trial only beheadings.
