$5.5m to clean drains in PoS

A $5.5 million programme for the comprehensive desilting of the four underground drains in Port of Spain will be implemented over the next two weeks, Works and Transport Minister Colm Imbert announced yesterday.

The progamme will encompass flood-proned areas such as Abattoir Road, South Quay, St Vincent and Abercromby Streets, Duke Street, Stone Road, Charles Street, London, Wrightson Road and Ajax Street, Wrightson Road by the Licensing Authority and Elizabeth Street by the Queen’s Park Oval.

However, Imbert noted that around March of this year, the ministry had cleaned these same drains.

’Clearly there are some broader issues they need to deal with,’ he said, adding that the ministry could not keep spending millions of dollars every six months to do the same task.

He said he knew that some of the problems arose from the construction activity in PoS, which was winding down.

’So hopefully we will not have to continue doing this,’ he said.

He recalled that two years ago, the ministry moved 100 truckloads-1,000 tonnes-of debris from the drains in the central business district.

’Clearly the drains are inadequate and there has got to be a more permanent solution,’ Imbert said.

Find the solution then? Get a committee or taskforce together and find the cure for the problem. We all know there is a problem, you were elected to find solutions and implement them. Do so!
Desilting Posted: 2009-11-05 4:35:00 PM
What a big joke, Desilting, POS needs new large drainage, all these new high rise building being built. Mr Imbert you need to resign with that idea. how about spending one billion. where is the oil money. spend some wisely for once.

Let's host a summit in south Trinidad, so that flooding can finally be alleviated in other flood prone areas
$5.3 Million to CLEAN Drains Etc Posted: 2009-11-05 10:06:00 PM
We do'nt care what the cost is,as long as the gov't spend our money for the benefit of our pple that's all that matters. Bottom line is,these are the things we the grass root will benefit from. It's a bloody shame it took so long and floods of complaints be4 you pple decided to do something about it. OAP'S
$5.5M to clear drains in POS Posted: 2009-11-06 05:21:00 AM
Another huge waste of the tax payers money. There have been a couple of great ideas as to how to alleviate the flooding in POS but Colmn isn't willing to listen, but there he is pondering about a more permanent solution. I would suggest getting rid of Colmn as a start.
the queen Posted: 2009-11-06 04:47:00 AM
yes the queen is comeing to trinidad, so the clean up is on...$$$$$ down the drain
Drains Posted: 2009-11-06 06:21:00 AM
A permanent solution is to replace ALL the drainage system in the country.
Litter Posted: 2009-11-06 06:25:00 AM
The amount of road side litter one sees on a daily basis is astonishing. People need to understand that all those bottles and plastic bags and even paper products that they throw into the streets clogs the drains and blocks them. The government is trying to do their part but you cannot blame them for the littering that we do.
Drainage Posted: 2009-11-06 05:04:00 AM
The whole country needs drainage. Manning should stop listening to his false prophet.
Coincidence? Posted: 2009-11-06 00:40:00 AM
Hmmmm, drain claened six monts ago,Summit of the Americas six months ago, drains cleaned over the next two weeks, CHOGM in two week's time. But of course it's just a coincidence right Imbert? As always, perform your duty only for the foreigners not for your people. S Waithe

5.5 million for drains Posted: 2009-11-06 05:49:00 AM
how many millions for swine flu
5.5 million to clean drains Posted: 2009-11-06 06:09:00 AM
And he is the 'so called' Mr of DRAINS or whatever, and he don't know that drains don't remain clean because you clean it once...
National Pride Posted: 2009-11-06 06:37:00 AM
Erect two National Flags instead and instill some pride in the citizens. Plus they will be looking up so they will not notice the flooding.
Coincidence? Posted: 2009-11-06 06:40:00 AM
Drains are cleaned only for the two Summits. So for the rest of the year we taxpayers must wade through flood waters in town in the hope that we could have a mad spending Summit to clean the drains. Furthermore, column indicated that the last time the drains were cleaned were two years ago but he also admitted that a cleaning was done in March this year (shortly before the Summit).
Cleaning the drains will not solve the problem. Posted: 2009-11-06 07:41:00 AM
The whole of Trinidad needs new and better drainage systems. 5.5 million to just clean these drains will not solve the problem of floods in the city. This is a waste of good money and a temporary solution. The government and public works should have already started a massive renovation of the city drainage system. The old system of drains in the city and elsewhere, were not design to cope with the current amount of water coming from more and huge rooftops. Since the island has a lot more houses and businesses, the current system where ever they are, including the city of Port of Spain cannot handle the rush or run off of water coming from rooftops or surrounding areas. You need deeper drains and protected grilled entrances to let water into the system and prevent garbage from getting into the drains. I am tired of seeing huge pieces of cardboard and debris float down the streets in the Port of Spain. This garbage usually plugs up the drain entrances and prevent the water from quickly entering the drains. Your temporary solution is to determine how you can prevent drains from being plugged or filled up with pieces of garbage or soil. Advise public works to ensure that huge piles of dirt from the construction process are covered, when rain falls to prevent the soil from getting into the drain system.

RE:CLEANING THE DRAINS WILL NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM Posted: 2009-11-06 1:21:00 PM
After reading your comments, there isn't much to add.Excellent summary of "things to do".All I can add is,to ask the Government if this is to help give the Party members a little Christmas spending money, just be sure that it's done right. There are some permanent hoes, aprroximately one foot diameter, that's placed in drains and run to an area, where the water will run off.It keeps the streets free from water during rain.I saw them in Okeechobee,Fl.Maybe your engineers can check into in.Just a thought.Merry Xmas to all who are given work to clear these drains. Please work for the money,I am sure that's all the tax-payers would ask.Or,and please give work to all,not just party members.Aubert Modeste
