4 PERISH
Road carnage continues...

DEATH TRUCK: A wrecker removes the mangled, gutted truck in which Anil Mohammed, Kishore Kumar and Rohan Maharaj were killed from the Bailey Bridge on the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway in Macoya yesterday. A fourth person was killed in a separate accident in Guayamare. -Photo: ANISTO ALVES

WITH the little money he had saved, Rohan ’Bobby’ Maharaj started his own business 12 years ago. His employees were young men from his home village.

Over the years, he worked tirelessly to ensure that his family was always happy, his father, Roopnarine Maharaj, 70, said yesterday.

The 36-year-old father of three was burnt to death along with his two employees-Kishore Kumar and Anil Mohammed-when his ten-wheeler truck crashed into the Bailey Bridge in Macoya around 1.15 yesterday morning.

Police said the men were trapped inside the vehicle when it burst into flames on impact.

An eyewitness said: ’I was returning from the airport when I saw the truck. It crashed into the bridge and immediately burst into flames. I pulled aside and rushed out to help, but I could not get through the flames.’

The man, who visited the Express South office yesterday, broke down in tears when he recalled the men begging for someone to help them.

’They were screaming and begging for help. Then all of a sudden they went silent,’ he said.

Relatives said the three were on their way to buy aggregate at National Quarries. Maharaj owned Bobby’s Stockpile Ltd at Lachoos Road, Penal, located downstairs the family’s home.

Roopnarine Maharaj said: ’He was the last of my five children and we lived together. He was a good person who started this business from scratch. This morning I heard my son from next door scream out and then he said someone called and said Bobby was in an accident.’

Maharaj’s two daughters and son-ages 12, eight and six-were being consoled by relatives yesterday. His wife, Anna, went to the Forensic Science Centre in St James to identify the body.

Two houses away, another family was mourning the loss of 30-year-old Kumar.

’I did not know where he was this morning. He was making a cook across the road with some friends and he did not come home. This morning someone came and told me that he went with Bobby and there was an accident,’ his mother, Jasodra Kumar, said.

Kumar said her son was a self-employed carpenter.

’But sometimes when things were slow he would work with Bobby. He would do anything he gets,’ she said.

Kumar, the first of four children, was not married and had no children.

At Mohammed’s home there were no mourners. His mother sat quietly on a bench outside.

’We don’t want her to know what happened until later because she is suffering with a heart ailment,’ a relative said.

The 30-year-old man was his parents’ only child.

’I don’t know what would happen if she finds out that her only child died. He was her everything,’ the relative said.

with the crime situation as it is the government or victims are not given any compensation but the great minister mr imbert chooses this tragic moment when the bodies probably haven't gotten cold yet to ask or seek compensation from the grieving families,mr minister choose the timing of your statements more aprropriately shameful
Re: how inappropriate Posted: 2009-11-06 12:14:00 AM
My sincere condolences to the family of those lost in this terrible accident. These citizens were hard working men. I agree with you on the subject of Minister Imbert's insensitivity. It's intresting that whenever lives are lost because of government's incompentence, this Minister's silence is the loudest. I truly feel for the people of T&T. This minister is no leader--a leader is "illuminating and gladdening to everything under the sun" [I Ching]. How awful this tragedy is to all of us. Capitol Hill/W.DC
Condolences to the family. Posted: 2009-11-05 8:50:00 PM
I partly grew up in Lachoos Rd. I don't know the family but I am sure my family living there know these people very well. It is indeed a very sad and discomforting thing to know these young men died the way they did. Condolences to the family, my heart goes out to you in your time of grief.
Bailey bridge again! Posted: 2009-11-05 4:30:00 PM
Come on Minister this is not the same bailey bridge that caused so much accident since it was erected as a the temporary/permanent bridge. My deepest condolences to the families.

Speeding Trucks Posted: 2009-11-06 03:10:00 AM
Sorry for the families loss... but can anyone recall seeing any of those trucks driving at or below the speed limit. How many of them trucks have killed innocent people before. Look at the wreck... only speed could have done that!! Slow down people
Macoya's Carnage Posted: 2009-11-06 04:05:00 AM
Sadly, we view another carnage on our roadway. What really happened we may not know since there was no survivor to tell the tale. There are only speculations. What I can testify to as a regular user of that bridge, is that, you must slow down when approaching and navigate carefully when crossing. In this instance I cannot blame the Authorities because there are adequate warning signs on the approach to the bridge. However, with the holiday season around, we motorist must be aware of the dead man's hours, that is, the hours between 1am and 4am when your body has a tendency to fall asleep especially after partying. Please take the necessary precautions as your life is in your hands
truck accident Posted: 2009-11-05 11:21:00 PM
drivers should be a little more or rather a lot more careful when driving especially when they have other people's lives in their hands

Macoya Bridge Posted: 2009-11-06 07:50:00 AM
My deepest sympathies to the families of the three men who perished but do motorist ever take heed to the sign before the bridge that says no vehicles over 3m in length allowed? On countless occasions I have seen policemen positioned before the bridge issuing tickets to motorists who drive on the emergency shoulder. Why hasn't this the length limit regulation been enforced also? The bridge is just a temporary structure. This is just my observation; I'm not saying this was the cause of the accident.

4 Perish.I don`t know when people would start being careful on our roads I say `our` because the roads belong to all of us but some people drive as if they belong to them alone. WE ARE NOT LEARNING from other people`s mistakes because we feel it cannot happen to us. They couldn`t drive but WE could drive.I think it`s too much testosterone because don`t see women making those kind of drives. We coward yes, the little fender bender yes, but not this reckless,life-threatening speeding and bad driving I see some men do.People please wake up and don`t let somebody`s death today be yours tomorrow. Concerned Citizen.

this is such a sad story, my condolences goes out to all the families affected by this accident. please people drive safe, it doesnt alwaya have to be your fault you could be in the wrong place at the wrong time. There's a saying we have here in the states, you have to drive for yourself and for other people.

gone way too soon in such a sad way!!!! God help theses grieving families.
SAD SAD SAD Posted: 2009-11-06 09:12:00 AM
Yes it was probably speed at that time of night, but for a truck that runs on Diesel to burst into flames doesn't make sense. Hope this is investigated thoroughly and the facts presented.
Bailey Bridge Accident Posted: 2009-11-06 04:37:00 AM
The government needs to work more deligently on getting this situation at the baily bridge rectified. Too many people are losing their lives!!! And matter of fact there have been tragedy lately with those bailey bridges, Caroni someone lose their life and Toco an entire villages was stranded just recently. Please Mr. Imbert we have enough to deal with as a society
Choose Life or Death Posted: 2009-11-06 12:07:00 AM
I don't even know these hardworking young men but my heart hurts for them and their families. We need to be more careful on the roads. Every move you make is a matter of life or death. When you see it like this you realize all these antics - the bad drive, the racing, running the light, swerving, driving on a shoulder to get there 2 mins earlier, one last drink - it's simply not worth your life or others'. Have love for your fellow drivers and think about your families. Please please please. R joseph, Dallas TX
People Talking Rubbish! Why Blame Colm Imbert??? Posted: 2009-11-06 05:56:00 AM
why people talking rubbish about the crime situation and Colm Imbert! I see how these foolish men drive across this bridge everyday. There's no way you can crash AND burn unless you were doing some MAJOR numbers on the speedometer. People need to take responsibility for themselves. These men drive like it's a plane they're flying. And honestly I have no remorse and don't feel sorry for people who die because of their own STUPIDITY! They should have known better! There are bad roads all over the bloody country. As yourselves, why most of the fatal accidents always happen around mosquito creek and recently the bailey bridge. Simple! Idiot Driving!
Re: People Talking Rubbish! Why Blame Colm Imbert??? Posted: 2009-11-06 1:09:00 PM
because..he is part of the government in power under which crime is unprecedented. Because Colm said they were speeding, do YOU know that for a fact? If they put safer bridges in place would it not reduce the likelihood of accidents? This is not the first accident on this bridge and will not be the last. Have YOU ever been in an accident, if so what was the root cause? Have YOU ever lost a loved one in an accident? Apparently not! You sound as ignorant and idiotic as Colm himself. Go Check your head man!
Re: People Talking Rubbish! Why Blame Colm Imbert??? Posted: 2009-11-06 4:05:00 PM
did you see the picture of the truck ? it crumple UP like news papers and exploded too ...use your God given common sense (making a hugh assumption hear). The government was not the driver of the truck and no amount of safe bridge or fatalities will stop them from SPEEDING .Sorry to say that is t&t drivers mentality. In order to be effective their minds have to be re-porgram by force. So the first thing to do is disable all vehicles ,not able to go more than 40 mph. i can bet 2 million $$$ drivers will be pissed off but lives will be saved.Nothing else will ever work in T&T...
Colm Imbert said nothing wrong Posted: 2009-11-06 11:02:00 AM
I see nothing wrong with Mr. Imbert actions. After all, he must do his job and remain objective. I'm sure investigations will show that this driver was speeding. If he had survived he would have been charged with negligent homicide! wreckless endangerment and whatever else the law can throw at him!
Re: Colm Imbert said nothing wrong Posted: 2009-11-06 08:05:00 AM
Agreed, but his timing was inappropriate. Listen, the families are grieving. Irregardless of why the accident occured, these people are dead today. Could Colm not wait until these people are buried and teh family allowed to grieve in their own privacy before making his statements? It is rather insensitive the way it was done and how quickly things were said. In my opinion this is a serious lack of Judgement by the minister and equally, a lack of compassion for the dead people's family.
Pay the Piper Posted: 2009-11-06 06:39:00 AM
Mr Minister wants the Widow and three fatherless Children to pay for a stupid bridge.Unless he is God he was not there to see what happened. Should somthing unfortunate happen to you some day Mr Imbert I hope people have more understanding and compassion than you have shown today. My condolences go out the the family of these men who died trying to provide for their families. Have faith in God he will make a way.
Condolences Posted: 2009-11-06 1:16:00 PM
Sincere condolence to all. Remembr GOD has a plan. Trini, NY
Irony Posted: 2009-11-06 1:18:00 PM
What is sad is that these wer hard working men. They are gone and the bad bandits continue to plague everyone. Only God knows, man will never be able to understand the mysteries of God. Rest in peace. may they watch over their numerous family and friends. Please pray without ceasing.
Bailey Bridge Tradegy Posted: 2009-11-06 07:14:00 AM
My condolences to the family. With that said I have seen on many occassions people not obeying the speed limit, as well as ignoring the MANY warning signs and signals when approaching that bridge. Drivers be more alert its people lives your are dealing with
4 Dead Posted: 2009-11-06 12:25:00 AM
How many more lives have to be claimed for the government to start implementing strict speed limits and penalties?? Too many lives being taken by something that is so avoidable.
