Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday says he has never agreed on any constitution with Prime Minister Patrick Manning.
’I don’t know that there is any agreement between Mr Manning and I on any constitution as far as I am aware. He has asked for our proposals to be studied, we have commented on his, which we said we do not agree,’ Panday told the media on Friday during the tea break of the Parliament.
Panday disclosed this when asked to comment on the views expressed by political leader of the Congress of the People (COP), Winston Dookeran, on the meeting between Panday and Manning.
On Tuesday, Panday and Manning met at the Diplomatic Centre in St Ann’s and agreed to work towards a new Constitution.
Panday and members of the UNC have rejected the present proposed draft Constitution.
Dookeran highly criticised this move, however, saying that he would mobilise the people to oppose what he described as the ’ManDay’ Constitution.
Commenting on Dookeran’s reaction, Panday said, ’It’s a very pitiable thing. It’s very sad. It was a great opportunity for him (Dookeran) to say what was their position on constitutional reform and what their draft was. That would have been better ... but then again that’s politics.’
Questioned on a letter issued by Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner, threatening legal action if the list of the party’s membership is not provided to him, Panday said he does not discuss party internal affairs.
However, he added, ’That’s totally irrelevant. There are too many problems to deal with, people don’t have water, their roads cannot be fixed to indulge in these peripheral matters.’
