Teen stabbed to death in mall brawl

injured: Brendon George

Relatives of murdered teenager Arnim Best are demanding answers as to why there are not proper surveillance cameras installed at the Trincity Mall in Trincity.

Best, 17, of Alexander Street, Tacarigua, was stabbed to death on Saturday night, while liming with friends at the mall. His relatives said yesterday that had cameras been ’properly installed, then images of his killers would be available to police’.

Police reports state that at around 8.15 p.m., Best and his friends, among them Brendon George, 18, also of Tacarigua, were liming inside the mall, in the vicinity of the food court, when they were approached by another group. An argument started and a fight soon ensued.

The teens were eventually escorted out the mall by security officers. Upon reaching outside, however, the group which opposed Best’s group once again started an argument and the fight resumed.

Best was stabbed multiple times during the brawl, while George also sustained injuries.

Best was rushed to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC) in Mt Hope, but died upon arrival. George was rushed to the Arima Health Facility and then transferred to the EWMSC. Homicide detectives are continuing investigations.

This might be a new low. In a public place, they were able to have a fight? Plus they were put out of the mall? That is wrong. They should have been sent to the police station... not just sent out on their own.
Robbing the Public Posted: 2009-11-09 01:17:00 AM
This is for the owners of the Trincity Mall. You are robbing your Customers Safety. If someone is to check the total of customers in a day that spending more than a Twenty Dollars; Proper Security could be maintained, not only inside of the Mall but outside, for customers vehicles. It is ridiculous to hear, that brawls and car theft taking place here. Come Help TNT reach a better 2020 also. Put up Cameras and train officer to do their duties properly.

Cameras ,police presence, the minister of home land security, not even the military can stop this from happening. Facts are our laws are not stong enough to stop this kind of activity from in Trinidad today.Very sad!!!.

This company did'nt care enough to have security worth a damn when it was cars being stolen for the parking lot. This escalation is to be expected.
The Mall Incident Posted: 2009-11-09 07:56:00 AM
This situation is very sad. The Mall need to have better security installation system indoors as well as outdoors to protect the people from such horrific crime. Placing two or three police officers can assist the situation tremendously.
Death in Mall Posted: 2009-11-09 09:05:00 AM

My condolences to the family. Teenagers need to realise that their actions can sometimes lead to serious consequences. A simple brawl at the mall has led to an innocent child's death. Think before you act..now the law is against this group and what is going to happen when you get caught. To the family, I believe that the mall is not to be blamed..it happened outside the mall...they were escorted out of the mall..so focus on mourning your loved one and get to the bottom of the issue.
Surprised this hasn't happened before... Posted: 2009-11-09 08:51:00 AM
Trincity Mall has had many incidents over the years (rampant car thefts, fights, robberies, break-ins) and mall management still doesn't implement security changes. There's a fight every week and the unarmed kids in security uniforms don't seem to know what to do or want to get involved. There should be a permanent police presence (perhaps a station inside the mall) since this mall (due to its location) attracts troublemakers and bandits. Other malls have police patrols inside the mall - why not Trincity as well?
Stabbing in mall Posted: 2009-11-09 08:53:00 AM
I go to Trincity Mall all the time.I had feared for the gang war fare to reach our mall. However,I feel that this accident will definitely affect all the patrons negatively. There is a definite need for more uniformed security especially in the food court. The behaviour of the people could be very undesirable when you are dining with your young children. I believe that the image of that mall will be tarnished, you will not wish to go to the cinemas as your safety is not protected. Mall manangement need to revisit their operations and make some quick action plan to quell the fear of the public. Concerned

The fracas occurred after 8p.m. why were the youths still "liming" out and why were the parents not sufficiently vigilent. These youths lined the stairways and elevators this weekend making it virtually impossible for the users to freely move. But even so, where is the security, no doubt in small measure and not sufficient to ensure the groups were warded out from the precints of the mall. Trincity Mall is a hazardous mall, thieves, murderers and the criminal element hang out there. I think we should boycott there.
Parental Supervision Posted: 2009-11-09 3:32:00 PM
Parents are always quick to place the blame on someone else instead of taking the blame themselves. The survivor must know who stabbed him. The security must have been able to identify the assailants. And parents where were you?
