I cannot believe that the day has come when I will agree with Manning. I totally agree with him. The building is for the performing arts, and all these people can think about is a place to hold fete. For once an educational institute is built for the the education and better welfare of the people of the country, and to expand the culture of the arts. From sun rise to sun down all these people can think about is fete, never education. Manning is so right, and I hope that he will stick to what he says, let them build their own building to hold their fetes, the promoters get enough money from these fetes to build a proper building for their entertainment. Again, kudos to Manning, for once he is beginning to make some sense. |

You must be one of the following .... (a) NOT a Trinidadian, (b) a Trinidadian that has been "Americanized" or other, (c) outright misinformed about "Trinidadian" culture, or (d) ALL or MOST of the above. Carnival is part of the Trinidadian culture. The REAL problem is that Trinidadians need to take pride in keeping anyplace ... not just at fetes ... clean. But the issue of national pride has and is presently obscured, due to the reckless spending by this government on things like million dollar flags, million dollar PM residences, million dollar stages for PM residences, MULTI-million dollar summits and heads of state conferences .... ALL of which are NOT needed and does nothing for the people of Trinidad and Tobago. When a government begins to spend the BILLIONS it has generated from oil, to help fight crime, distribute first class health care, build proper roads, allows its citizens the right to water and electricity, CARES for its people, then you begin to instill National pride. So please, agree with Manning all you want ... the bottom line here is that a people only learns and does what their leaders show them to do ... and this government shows and does nothing of true National pride their people. |

This is one of the few time I have agreed with the Prime Minister. Those promoters need to build their own facility instead of depending on the government. Randy Glasgow was recently comparing the Jean Pierre complex to the Madison Square Garden in that the people need a place for cultural and sporting event. What Mr. Glasgow failed to mention or probably did not know is that the City of New York DOES NOT own the Garden, instead it's privately owned by Cablevision. |

Mr. Manning, do we need to remind you that you are the P.M. of all of T&T. These structures were built by 'the gov't' for the use of citizens of this country, with our money, and not for the sole use of the 'gov't' as you called it. There is a disconnect between this gov't in power and the people of this country. You attempt to insult the promoters telling them to 'build your own' does not go down well for the people of this nation. The promoters put on shows not for themselves but for the people; and is it not the people's money that built these structures.
I guess the next thing you will be telling this nation is that if we want heatlh care, we should build our own institutions; if we want better educational systems, we should build them ourselves; if we want better road, we should build them ourselves, etc.
"What they trying to do, embarrass the Government? The goverment will not allow that to happen." Sorry Mr. Manning but I wish to brig you back to reality - You do not need anyone's help to embarrass yourself .. you are doing a perfect job all by your own pompous self.
If you agree to allow promoters to uses these structures, then ensure in the Agreement that they are liable for all damages should they occur, and use the money you collect to make the necessary repairs. Remember Mr. Manning these are your people, good - bad - ugly - indifferent, who attend these events! You Sir, are looking at the product of your governance, the 'hard' work when you see those you consider 'undesirable people who destroy'. You need to do a better job at governance, because if you don't our people will go down the path of further destruction, and certainly take you down with them. |

Yes, Mr. Manning, tell it like it is. I wrote yesterday that these promoters were fast and out of place to expect our government to provide them with venues so that they can line their pockets and overcharge our citizens. Bringing to Trinidad a bunch of dancehall felons who want to come to our country and settle their differences. I applaud these comments by the Prime Minister. I live in NY and when I read the Trinidad papers, I wonder who is in charge. The people have the government like a booboolee. They want everything for nothing. They complain about everything and feel a sense of entitlement with their gimme, gimme attitude. It is time government officials respond to these loudmouths and let them know that they work for the people of Trinidad and not the "money-changers in the temples". Bravo, Mr. Manning, it is the first time I ever hear you tell it like it is. They are in the business of making money and they should spend it on facilities for their programs. Do like Jack Warner and build their own Center of Excellence and keep their stupid, commonplace events there. These people will only mash up the new facilities with their bad behaviour. Bottle and stone pelting and then is bullets. Close them down. Do not stumble. Stand strong. Let them go into their jahji bundles of money and build their own place. End of story. |

Even thought I rarely agree with the PM, I have to agree with him on this one, and that is the condition of the facilities how they are left after events. This now is a good opportunity for investors to construct a privately owned arena, such as the AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami or the EnergySolutions Arena in Salt Lake City.

I agree with prinme Minister Manning 100%.
Fete promoters should build their own dammmm fete stadiums. they make millions of dollars every year with no reguards to the people's safety and the grounds they do their thing on.
The Government is not responsible for a place for you to fete. The Government is responsible for Roads,Hospitals,Schools,Safety, maybe a National Theatre, give you Parks for recreation and sports, Water and Swewage, lights. No place to fete and make money. You build it your own dammmm self. take some of the millions you make each year after you lie to the Government and tell them you did not make any money, get together with Glasscow,Iwer,Marchal and build your own dammmmm place.

I am very critical of the Prime Minister but I totally agree with him on this one. Who profits when these fetes are held and who incurs the debt? It just means that party-goers are paying twice; there should have been a standard deposit which should have been paid in the event of failure to honour the contract. That's how things are supposed to be done. There are venues that can be rented to facilitate carnival fetes. Wembley stadium in England (our national stadium) is rented out to promoters, but the standard and national pride associated with Wembley is not paralleled with the Hasley Crawford I guess...bottom line we don't care about our own.. |

The decision to ban fetes at the stadium by the prime minister is one that i totally agree with. Why is it that year after year the said government giving these promoters permission to "mash up de stadium" while laughing their way to the bank with bags of cash. To top it off ,they even cry that "they not making money". Every year carnival comes i get blasted vex when these promoters call on the government to sponsor their shows because they "losing money".Yet,year after year they promoting these shows. Who they trying to fool? Have you really seen the kind of sponsers that help with the promotion of these shows? "Flag man" Mr. hunt, i totally agree with you and Mr. Manning (something must be wrong with me i actually agree with both of them}.What business man do you know in this "banga season" or for that matter in the years gone by, will go into a business venture and lose money.I have seen in the past what they did to skinner park, the mecca of football and other sporting events in the south, and i cringe in anticipation what they will do to the stadium or Jean Pierre complex in the future.GOOD SHOW Mr. Prime Minister.(and it was not even held at the arts centre) |

for far too long these promoters, band leaders, party goers have been taking advantage of what the "freeness" in this country. After the fetes, the promoters don't clean the streets, even though they damn well know people attending their event messes it up.
The audacity of the whole thing now is that they want the government to build a "proper" facility for them to use.
Apparently they seem to forget that every cent the "government spends" comes from the taxpayers, who by the way, may not approve the fact that their money will be used to build another "well spent" centre. |

If this is attitude that the Prime Minister responds to concerns of the public, then we all can understand the reason we are in this situation.
A ban of smoking in public places does not affect him, because he quit smoking.....so he does not care.
Raise in chicken prices does not affect him because he does not eat chicken .....so he does not care.
People cannot afford housing does not affect him, because taxpayers built his.....so he does not care.
people are dropping dead waiting at our hospitals does not affect him, because he could fly to Cuba to get medical attention....so he does not care.
No one dares venture out anywhere after 6 pm for fear of being robbed, raped, or killed does not affect him because he has a batallion of security around him......so he does not care.
this is what we chose. |

only damages the playing field resulting in the inability to use it for the playing of sporting games, and the very high cost of refurbishing it.-wayne francis New york |

The comment from Mr Fernandez is the most ridiculous I’ve heard in a long time and thankfully, he’s now resigned his position. When you hold a position such as his and you speak publicly in such a manner, you must speak for the people you represent not for yourself.

In this instance, Mr. Manning is 100%, ABSOLUTELY CORRECT! These fete promoters and the attending crowds want to act like animals and 'mash up de place' everytime they get together for a supposedly good time. It is rare that one or more people is not shot, stabbed, chopped or beaten up during one of these fetes. Why, indeed, should the government be involved in that sort of rogue behavior and then allow the promoters to profit from it? As much as I disagree with Mr. Manning on other things, in this case, I am in total agreement with him. Stand your ground, Patrick! |

Then we will never have anything classy in regard to after a so called fete/rum party the place will be left in a state of mess and piss etc. But I don't agree with him to say build your own are these buildings his personal property? I live in Brookly USA so I am confused but what I think he could of stated in my opinion in a professional dialogue is that historic sites are not for fetes and maybe the government will try and construct or provide a venue/s for having these fetes. Isn't Trinidad and Tobago the #1 place in the world for the greatest show on earth our culture called Carnival and what about our steel pan. This is excellent!!! We need to take care of our facilites and not have it deteriorate due to fetes. If it is used and left in proper condition then this rule would not be put in place. Way to go Mr Manning. MichFL |

Dear Mr Manning, Please remember you are an elected official, chosen by the people, for the people, therefore if cannot adequately meet the needs of citizens, private enterprises included who are also citizens then they would simply elect representatives you would do the job instead of making stupid remarks like"BUILD YOUR OWN" |

I agree with the Hon Prime Minister. Many foreigners consider us a fete loving people and as one person put it Trinis would have a fete "at the drop of a hat" .This facility is a performing Arts Centre not a Party and fete centre.

The key points missing on the various sides of this issue are (1) insuffucient funding for the upkeep of these facilities, (2) lack of skilled, trained, knowledgeable and certified stadium maintenance management and grounds professionals, and (3) lack of a comprehensive facilities maintenance plan for the various stadiums and sporting sites throughout Trinidad & Tobago. Around the world, stadiums are used for concerts, parties/fetes, and cultural events therefoe Mr. Mannings' comments are ill-informed and counter-productive. We must hire professional managers and employees who are skilled in the management and maintenance of these sporting facilities so that our tracks, fields, swimming pools, soccer & cricket & tennis grounds are of world class quality. High School running tracks in the USA are 1000 times better that the Hasley Crawford running track. The problem is not just the fetes, but the ability and commitment to manage and maintain our grounds and facilities. We wonder why our athletes performance is sub-standard. Don't blame our athletes, take a look at ourselves, our ill-informed sporting ministers including the athletic governing bodies. (Florida) |

Ok, Mr Manning, lets hope this new rule is applied across the board to all organizations including the People's National Movement. Such that, when election time rolls around, no sporting facility in T&T is used by any "Political" party as a venue to host propaganda meetings or rallies as those gatherings can be defined as fetes in T&T. I will be keeping a close eye on this issue Mr. Manning. Time is longer than twine. |
Something is wrong here....

If we utilize our sporting facilities for sporting events solely in T&T. All the stadiums will dry rot. The government doesn't contribute any money towards our sporting groups. I would like to see the financial reports of the Ministry of Sports for the past five years. I see the same Ministry of Sports waste our money installing thumb recognition software for its employees. Like they expecting spies to infiltrate the Ministry of Sports to thief the keys to the stadium to hold carnival fetes????? |

Not a very temperate response. Someone here has already said that the Stadia need an income for maintenance. Clearly the rules for use may need revising. Perhaps alllowing certain types of events and not those demeaning and ant-social. This can be a symbiotic relationship for the stadia, the upkeep of which must be extremely expensive, given how many we have. Who will pay for the lights and upkeep, the chilren who play there???
I can tell you for sure that the fete promotors will find or build their own facilities, then we the people will get NOTHING from these private enterprises for upkeep.
These stadia will become bigger liabilities where they could be income generators going back into sport development.

Build your own he said...let's see how much criticism you could stand when you do your own ventures. Sometimes the PM have to put people in their place and rightly so. |
