T&T officially in recession, says Williams

greater decline: Ewart Williams

Trinidad and Tobago is officially in a recession.

Central Bank Governor Ewart Williams confirmed yesterday what the business sector and the labour force have been reeling from for months-that the local economy contracted for the third consecutive quarter.

Gross domestic product shrank by one per cent in the last three months of 2008, then by 4.6 per cent at the start of 2009, then again by 3.6 per cent up to the end of the second quarter of this year, Williams said during a news conference to launch the October issue of the Bank’s Monetary Policy Report at the Central Bank tower, Port of Spain.

’Perhaps, by the conventional definition, we are in a recession,’ he said, referring to the three consecutive declines in GDP growth.

’But these conventional definitions need to be taken with a pinch of salt.’

He argued this ’pinch of salt’ was required because the United States was coming out of a recession now (even though analysts expect it to be a jobless recovery), and inflation has come down from 15 per cent last year to about five per cent up to September in Trinidad and Tobago.

While there are positives like this, there continues to be negative developments that continue to play havoc with the local economy. These include an increase in unemployment from five per cent to 5.1 per cent which, in real terms, translates to about 5,700 job losses in the past few months.

Even worse is that the Central Bank is now projecting a greater decline in GDP to the end of this year.

Williams said the decline in 2009 would be in the range of 1.5 per cent to two per cent, compared to an earlier projection of 0.9 per cent.

The recession could last until the second quarter of next year when investor confidence may pick up in the country, Williams told the Express following the conference.

There has also been continued pressure on the Trinidad and Tobago dollar and increased demand for US dollars in the country.

With reduced earnings in the energy sector, there was also a reduction in the conversion of foreign exchange in the first ten months of the year.

Williams noted the Central Bank sold US$1.389 billion to support demand for US currency.

He said the Central Bank has been meeting with commercial banks to better address delays smaller customers experience when they try to get cash in the range of US$10,000. But there is no need for customers to ’warehouse’ US currency, he said, adding the Central Bank had ample supplies of foreign exchange.

TT in Recession Posted: 2009-11-13 01:55:00 AM
It is hillarious that the Central Bank Governer says that TT is in recession, when the average man on the street knew that a long time ago. It seems like Mr. Williams and the government was in a coma and just woke up. By this time the rest of the world is talking about the rate of recovery. It is also misleading to suggest that it is positive that there was a big drop in inflation. This deflation occurred due to a drop in demand and oversupply due to the recession. That can easily lead to depression. It would be healthy if the deflation was due to increased productivity and efficiency. God bless good ole T&T.
I do not agree.. Get your calculator and do the math Posted: 2009-11-13 02:20:00 AM
Trinidad and Tobago is in the middle of mismanagement of its Petroleum revenues. Our woes are being brought about by an administration that is hell bent on shoving multimillion costing non essentials up our noses. Whenever I hear the word stadium or government project I want to puke. If you add up all the none essentials that was spent on, being spent on, and projected to be spent, then throw in the cost of the piece of scrap iron called the 360 degree radar and wallop!! You will see why we are in the red. Not spending all that money will automatically put us in the green. Get a calculator and do the math, you will see that I am correct. Technically speaking the leadership of this country drove us into our current financial situation. Unless you are blind, deaf, dumb, mentally challenged or a mute, you should be able to understand our situation. In this circumstance the ends definitely did not justify the means. Lloyd C. When Losers Lead Posted: 2009-11-13 02:40:00 AM
It took Trinidad more than 1 yesr after the recession hit to recognise that there is a recession. While the government spend like drunks and the PM tell citizens that we are immune! Now there is a recession. Citizens will soon have to eat the Tarouba sunami centre, The glorified buildings patterned after a dictator like Sadam Hussein. What losers we are!!
Check your calculations Posted: 2009-11-12 10:04:00 PM
If an increase in .1% in unemplyment is 5,700 jobs that implies the the job force in T&T is 5.7 million people. Am just saying that either the figures are wrong or the calculation is wrong
T & T Officially in recession Posted: 2009-11-13 03:17:00 AM
MR Manning and his crazy spending making things worst....
T&T officially in recession, says Williams Posted: 2009-11-12 11:20:00 PM
Get your facts straight Mr. Williams. Yes the economy is bad all around, but crime is the contributing factor on the economy in Trinidad. Business people are afraid, they close their stores early. The price of goods are on the rise, because of crime, the business people have to recoup their losses some where. So it is not just the bad economy, it is crime which is running rampant in the country.
recession Posted: 2009-11-13 06:44:00 AM
so how come we knew that the local economy was in a recession before the governor ?
Unreliable Posted: 2009-11-13 05:51:00 AM
At first he said that the US economy will not adversely affect TnT (big joke). Then he said it will. Then he said no need to panic. The PM said loosen your belt. Now the CB governor is now saying: Start to PANIC we are officially in a recession. The officials need to stop fooling the people. Accept reality, level with the citizens and come up with solutions.
Trinidad in Recession! Posted: 2009-11-13 07:32:00 AM
After spending so much money on the summit, the building of that Performing Arts structure and certain officials who have an affinity for purchasing expensive material to make flags and curtains, of course, why wouldn't we be in a recession. I believe that the word "recession" is being used here to justify wasteful spending of the Nation's finances.
Recession in T&T Posted: 2009-11-13 01:48:00 AM
Perhaps the govenor feels the entire population are all fools. T&T has been in a recession for 3 quarters and will still be in one come 2010.
What recession??? Posted: 2009-11-13 03:26:00 AM
Oil prices at an all time high. Massive spending by the government. The Prime Minister said a short time ago "losen your belt". This man should be fired for spreading such unnecessary fear. A national flag was recently raised at the cost of $2,000,000. Such waste is not reflective of recessionary times. We are in the good ole days of PNM spending.
Recession Posted: 2009-11-13 07:51:00 AM
I wonder if someone has informed the government about this, because they seem to be living in an alternate universe. But then again they can afford the life the are living, they have a rather large salary which I'm sure they receive on time, not to mention the allowances they receive that comes in the form of more money and some sort of transport. They probably get special medical benefits as well like paid doctor visits and treatment.I can see why many members of the government go on national television and not be bothered by the recession we have been facing for some time now, their spending habits are totally different from the average citizen.
Start planting vegetables in pots folks. Posted: 2009-11-13 08:19:00 AM
My mother raise my sister & myself on her kitchen garden. She never sold her crops but she never had to buy vegetables. The only things she bought are things like flour, oil, salt, you get the picture. Have a "can do" attitude & things will be OK.
T&T officially in recession Posted: 2009-11-13 03:30:00 AM
Since the PNM took power, most of us has been in a recession, so it is business as usual for most of us in TnT
Thanks for information Posted: 2009-11-13 12:21:00 AM
Like we could not figure this one out on our own. But thank goodness we have these people being paid alot of money to tell us the obvious... How to survive the recession is what i want to hear about...
What recession? Posted: 2009-11-13 1:22:00 PM
Is the goodly governor joking? Does he read or listen to the news? One simple piece of advice...take a drive around Port of Spain and look at all the magnificient new buildings that dot the landscape! How could this possibly happen in a recession? Time to begin our own trini dictionary!ttforgigner
Why are we so ignorant! Posted: 2009-11-13 3:18:00 PM
Why are the people posting comments attacking the Governor of the Central Bank? He is reporting the statistics ... that's his job. He can't say there is a recession until the quarterly figures can back him up. People ... Stop being so ignorant and find out the meaning of the term recession before commenting! Think before you speak! That's a sign of maturity.
