Prison visits in limbo after scuffle with officers

PRISONS officers said yesterday they were uncertain what may happen this week with regard to visits by relatives and friends of inmates at the Golden Grove Prison, Arouca, following a scuffle between visitors and prisons officers on Friday afternoon.

Ceron Richards, speaking on behalf of the Prisons Officers Association, said officers were not in the business of tampering with visits to the prison in any way, but ’we want to be able to do our jobs in a safe manner.’

Friday afternoon’s incident comes on the heels of two other incidents which left one prisons officer dead and another nursing gunshot wounds.

The three incidents were not related, but since the November 7 murder of prison officer Ian Seegobin, prisons officers have been making a call to be armed while off duty, better security around the jails, along with other security measures.

The Sunday Express was reliably informed that around 5 p.m. on Friday, ’the man in charge’ of visits to the prison suggested to visitors that instead of a 15-minute visit, the time be shortened to ten minutes to facilitate the large number of visitors that day.

The visitors reportedly agreed, except for one male visitor who was allegedly ’very unhappy’ at the reduced time and became unruly.

While being escorted off the premises, the man reportedly struck a senior officer on the head.

’He was dealt with,’ said a source, but other visitors, standing along the Golden Grove Road, saw what was happening and began pelting stones at the prisons officers.

Prisons officers from the Emergency Response Unit, along with police officers from the Arouca Police Station, were called in.

According to reports, the man who struck the officer and a woman who was caught pelting stones were arrested and charged and are expected to appear in court tomorrow.

Since the beginning of this month, there had been two attacks against prisons officers.

In the first incident, 25-year-old Anthony Sinanan was shot moments after he exited the Golden Grove prison in Arouca on November 2. Sinanan survived the shooting but sustained gunshot wounds to his legs. The second incident occurred last week Saturday night when Ian Seegobin, 34, was fatally shot while visiting relatives at Cemetery Street in Five Rivers, Arouca.

headed towards hell Posted: 2009-11-15 06:53:00 AM
...More evidence that we live in a failed state and that we are inexorably headed towards a civil eruption. It will be very ugly. Those who can will flee the country. The rest of us will try to survive the hell that will break loose for there will be nothing to rely on - not the State, not the forces of "law and order", not respect for life and property - nothing...
Prison visits Posted: 2009-11-15 1:52:00 PM
All prison visits should be suspended until a full review of visitor policies is completed. There should never be an "influx of vistors" at the prison at any one time. The number of visitr intake should not exceed the ability of the guards to secure and control them. The state needs to authorize prison guards, who seem to be the latest uniformed victims of crime, to shoot in self defence, or in defence of another oficer endangered by visitor behaviour. Signs posting this new policy should be displayed prominently when visits are resumed. In disrupted societies, people are contstantly testing the limits of authority. A few wellplaced bullets knee caps fr example, should curb the tendency to attack officers. This could not happen in an American prison. Copy them in this, as we do in so much that is not worthy or serious. Every visitor MUST be searched thoroughly, and one visitor per prisoner at a time. No children allowed. If a man with children, or a woman, commits a crime, they should be deprived of their childen for the duration of the sentene. No food packages either. Drugs go in that way. Jail should nmean no Christmas cake, no dhal puri and so on. Let us get serious with lawbreakers.

Where/Who next are the attacks going to come from? One judge said recently for prisoners to protest. For years reports/complaints have been made to have improvements done to the ways operations at some facilities are conducted. No one paid attention and treated the reports as ramblings of an Association/group of Officers trying to make them look bad. Wander who is looking bad now? Prison officers have rights to Arrest. Look at your Code of Conduct Lock them up.Don't let nobody come to your place of work and abuse you. Stay Strong.
