The investigating officer probing the circumstances surrounding the death of teenager Tyrone Peters has recommended that an inquest be held.
The recommendation comes from Inspector Mahabir, who is attached to the Tunapuna Police Station, and who was detailed to investigate the matter.
The file was forwarded to Sen Supt Joseph Edwards, who heads the Northern Division.
Peters, also called ’T Boy’, of Santa Cruz Old Road, Lower Santa Cruz, was held by police officers on August 18, and was expected to be placed on several identification parades in connection with various crimes in the North Eastern Division.
He was detained at the La Horquetta police station, but was found hanging in his cell on August 22.
An autopsy performed on August 24 at the Forensic Science Centre in St James, by pathologist Dr Valery Alexandrov, revealed Peters died as a result of asphyxia caused by hanging.
Relatives, however, disputed police officers’ version of events that Peters hung himself and retained the services of pathologist Dr Hughvon des Vignes.
On August 27, a second autopsy was performed by des Vignes at the body preparation room of the Saint Rose Funeral Home in Tunapuna.
Des Vignes findings suggested Peters died as a result of throttling (application of arm lock or choke hold).
The second report’s results ’did not confirm findings consistent with hanging’.
The file prepared by Inspector Mahabir contains the statements of officers on duty at the time of Peters’ death, along with Alexandrov’s and des Vignes’ autopsy results.
