4 sent home for beating parent, child at school

Four pupils at the Gasparillo Secondary School have been suspended from classes for beating a parent and his daughter outside the school last Friday.

The pupils are now being investigated by police.

Principal Samuel Owen said yesterday it was an isolated incident at a school that was excelling.

Last Friday’s incident happened after classes ended for the day.

An eyewitness said the parent drove his car onto the school’s compound and the vehicle almost struck a pupil. The witness said ’the pupils pulled the man out of his car and started beating him severely and went further to damage the man’s car’.

The man’s daughter tried to stop the attack. But the witness said ’she, too, was badly beaten. She ran into a bus trying to hide, and six girls followed her into the bus and started beating her. The child was crying out to teachers who were passing to help her; the security guard was sitting behind a desk at the booth, and no one came to help her’.

A school official said the parent may have provoked the attack.

’He should have probably turned the car around and come back to the school and reported the incident, but he chose to get out of the car,’ the official said.

The school official wants to blame the parent for provoking the attack, but witnesses said that the students pulled the parent out of his car!!! clearly this school official is trying to condone what the students did! no wonder trinidad in such a mess!! -RDR

parent, child beaten Posted: 2009-11-19 11:41:00 PM
I am astonished at the comment made by the school official concerning this incident. Assuming that the parent provoked the students does that give them the right to attack him and his child. In the same way the official said the parent should have reported the incident in the same way the students could have done it. My God what are we teaching our children. It's ok to attack someone if they threaten you? No help was given to the child who had nothing to do with all of this, the guard nor the teachers helped. What is going on in this country. Are we savages? Are we living in prehistoric times? This is unacceptable...M
Trinidad, Trinidad, Trinidad Posted: 2009-11-19 11:46:00 PM
I am amazed that even security chose to sit and not do anything. Are we now afraid of students now. I beg you parents of Trinidad and Tobago be better role models for your children, teach your children how to respect again. If you are not safe in schools anymore imagine where Trinidad would be in the next 10 years.
lawlessness continues Posted: 2009-11-20 04:00:00 AM
It's a real shame. The kinds of violence that pervades in our schools. I am a teacher and the kinds of stories that I hear from other schools saddens me. Please parents do your parenting duties. It appears that the family unit is absent and some of the students lack morales and values because some of them are so incredibly hostile and violent. The government has to take an active tole as well and implement laws to protect other students and teachers from violence in the schools.
4 Sent home for beating parent, child at school Posted: 2009-11-20 05:10:00 AM
The parents of those children should be ashamed of themselves, your children have no respect for adults. It says a lot for how they were brought up. What they should have done was take the registration number and make a complaint at the principals office, instead 6 young ladies acted in a shameful manner.
Parent beaten...... Posted: 2009-11-19 11:11:00 PM
Don't pass this off on the parent. What about those unruly kids we have in the schools. Expel them ALL....
4 Sent Home Posted: 2009-11-20 00:58:00 AM
What exactly are the school officials teaching those students about violence and retaliation? I certainly hope it's NOT that if someone provokes you, it's okay to go ahead and attack them. Perhaps too, the school official should have read the eyewitness' account before he made his asinine comments.
Turning the blind eye! Posted: 2009-11-20 06:31:00 AM
That may be true that the parent may have provoke the attack but it condone the guard's inaction. He should be disciplined.

I am absolutely appalled at the inherent attitude in the reporting of this story. One gets the feeling that somehow there is some justification for the way the pupils behaved. Wake up people, there can never be any justification for this type of appalling behaviour, accidents do happen and I am sure the parent did not drive into the school with the intention of hitting one of its pupils with his car! The children seem to have responded like a rabid pack, ready to exact vicious punishment at the slightest provocation, whether they are in the right or not. There seems to be no balance thinking from the children and scant respect or regard for their victims. The description of the child being hounded and beaten, is especially harrowing. When on earth did it become ok for children to exact such punishment on an individual and his child for trying to protect her father. I would wager that any one of the children attacking would have behaved in exactly the same way if they saw their own parent being attacked. An extremely sad story and does not bode will for the future of Trinidad. Let's hope it is an isolated incident in a school that is excelling. Excelling in what though is the question

What is this world coming to. Its been said that a crimminal mind develops at early as age three. Seems we are breeding monsters into this world.
Re: 4 sent home Posted: 2009-11-20 08:30:00 AM
What do you expect? Children having children today and if they themseves have no discipline what can they teach their own. A sorry state of affairs.
Beating at School Posted: 2009-11-20 05:14:00 AM
I just hope this is not the attitude of the school administrator, "Lord help T & T.
Gasparillo beating Posted: 2009-11-20 06:57:00 AM
What an indifferent society we live in. Teachers and the posted security didn't assist. Oh great now a new generation of hooligans to be let loose on us. I know somebody will spin it to say is the Government fault, but is the parents fault. What are these people teaching their children!! who say strict birth control measures, geez....
MADDNESS!! Posted: 2009-11-20 05:33:00 AM
"A school official said the parent may have provoked the attack." What madness is this!!!! No matter who provoked the attack, it should of never happened!! I still trying to figure out if this is a school they are talking about. A school with minors, and teachers.....you know those adults we trust to leave our children with daily!!! To the parents of the students who did this......CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME!!!
School beating Posted: 2009-11-20 05:45:00 AM
The security failed in doing their duties which is to protect all involved . The police should have been called in to find out the circumstances and the school is in no positions to pass judgement . This could have been worst if there were weapon involved or if the parent decided to use his car as a weapon . -Arnie Toronto .
Pupils Suspended Posted: 2009-11-20 05:49:00 AM
When will it end for this kind of behavour, we are fast desending into a state of complete lawlessness. Suspention is all they got, in my day we were kick out of school for sure.
4 Sent home for beating parent, child at school Posted: 2009-11-20 05:58:00 AM
Bad enough that he allegedly did what they said he did but this man allowed himself to be pulled out of his car and be badly beaten by school kids. What a wimp!
Community service Posted: 2009-11-20 01:09:00 AM
These students no matter what have no right or reason to fight. Prosecute them, make them community service and and punish the parents of these delinquent students.. Let these "bullies" and "cowards" get a good taste of justice. This is sicking. School is now a war zone. Since it is war zone eliminate the enemy.
Parent and daughter beaten at school. Posted: 2009-11-20 01:38:00 AM
The students should be permanently suspended from this school. The security guard should be fired and not allowed to work in any related fields. The victims should be heavily rewarded from stiff fines payable by the parents of these loosers.
Dat School Official talking nonsense Posted: 2009-11-20 08:21:00 AM
Wow, that school official at the end of the article, should have kept his/her mouth shut...never read such idiotic words. No wonder these children could act like devils,... because of school officials like this, that endorse such behaviour. Steups
who's lying then? Posted: 2009-11-20 01:51:00 AM
the report states that the students pulled the parent out of the car and started beating him, now a school official said that the parent came out of the car and provoked the matter. These children have no right to attack anyone. After school they are known to walk in front of cars as if they are intouchable. What does the security guard get paid for? I say bring back punishment in schools so that these arrogant students could have some respect for their elders!
Concerncing the Gasparrilo Secondary School Posted: 2009-11-20 06:51:00 AM
The School Official should consider how a group of children pull out the father of the car and beat him and also the daughter, they should see what exactly occurred before they comment to the paper
Student beating Posted: 2009-11-20 07:18:00 AM
School Official, it nice to know how you and your staff address problems. your coments was uncalled for, in other words it's ok to beat people and there kids up? don't we have enought going on in the country we have to add more to the crime and violence. and what't with the officer sitting at his desk and not doing anythink? must be nice to sit on the job. ONLY IN Trinidad, much love Washington DC
4 sent home for beating parent Posted: 2009-11-20 03:59:00 AM
I am sure the parent was not deliberately trying to run over the student. And why viciously attack him and his daughter? The school needs to step up and get rid of these hoodlums who are a menace to other students.
All You Crazy Posted: 2009-11-20 09:06:00 AM
That is why we have so much crime in Trinidad. when a grown up cannot not discipline a child, no body knows the truth here, but in no way are children right in beating an adult. When these same children commit murder then all of you will hold your heads and bawl. Stop the sh** now. We are spearing the rod and spoiling the children till now they are rotten
Beating parent and daughter Posted: 2009-11-20 09:23:00 AM
Schoold children have no right to pull people our cars and behave in this manner. What hooligans are we producing in our society. Well done to put the students out of school. I would certainly NOT want my child to attend such a school. Shame on them. Blame some of this on the parents of these children too.
no one does anthing? Posted: 2009-11-20 09:38:00 AM
So they teachers and a guard sees this attack and no one does anything to stop it or call the police? They should be held responsible, even if they feel the parent "provoked" this. Stupidity at its finest again.
Stupid comment by school official Posted: 2009-11-20 08:12:00 AM
Wait, the "school official" is blaming the PARENT here? I think I now understand why students feel they could do anything they want. I say bring back corporal punishment.
Did the school official listen to the eye witness? Posted: 2009-11-20 10:02:00 AM
How can the parent choose to be dragged out of his car? The school officials let the behaviour of their pupils get to this point. Maybe it is time to re-introduce beating.
Nonsence Posted: 2009-11-20 05:21:00 AM
This type of excuse by "school officials" is utter nonsence. In my days, chirlden should respect elders.
4 sent for beating parent Posted: 2009-11-20 04:14:00 AM
Trinidad sounds like a land where hooligans rule...imagine the teacher saying the parent may have provoked the attack...justifying the actions of the students....what has happened to this country
Beating of parent and child Posted: 2009-11-20 09:20:00 AM
What madness is this. Children don't go to school to learn anymore. And why can't parents set the proper example by not being confrontational and apologizing when they do something wrong. That is the problem. Some parents don't act like parents and so the children don't act right too. Also, why didn't anybody call for help? With so much cell phone and blackberrys that these people have no one called for help? And what is the purpose of the security guard? Just to open and close the gate to the school? Utter nonsense! Philly Chemist
pupils gone wild...... Posted: 2009-11-20 09:21:00 AM
So according to the school official, the parent probably provoked the attack by these young children since he may have accidentally driven too close to somebody. I hope his/her daughter does not "provoke" her own attack by wearing a nice pair of shorts or accidentally bumping someone or having a Blackberry..........Are we condoning bad behavior in the school system?
No excuse for bad behavior! Posted: 2009-11-20 09:28:00 AM
What does it mean by chose to get out of the car. IS this moronic security officer condoning the actions of these illiterate thugs that are to be the leaders of Trinidad one day. parent, Teacher, and those in authority need to grow a back bone and stop having the youth of the nation destroy what's left on T&T grow a back bone and stop having the youth of the nation destroy whats left on T&T
Where are the 'cool' heads? Posted: 2009-11-20 11:17:00 AM
Almost hitting someone is no reason to attack anyone, nor it is a reason to claim provocation. In fact, if the driver was being reckless, it would have been proper to report the incident. Taking matters into one's own hands is uncalled for. Dragging a man out of his car? That kind of behavior is reminicent of gangland tactics. The Mobs rule... This incident could have escalated into something tragic as if it were not tragic enough. Reckless driving and pedestrians who have a 'bounce meh nah' attitude is just a reflection of the descent into a darkness that Trinidad is heading into. Maybe the driver was challenged to hit the student and he attempted to oblige...
parent and child beaten Posted: 2009-11-20 11:18:00 AM
you know after this hooliganism by the "children" an official from the school is trying to pass the blame, it is clear that if the teachers and security guard was afraid to do something about the matter, then they are afraid of these children for some reason, they better hope for their sake they don't turn on them, then I wonder who would they say provoked the attack.
What? Posted: 2009-11-20 10:14:00 AM
right or wrong children cannot run rampant like this. Father and child beaten. i strongly suggest that these delinquents be dealt. We all need to start watching out for each other. The teachers and guard that sat by should be beaten in public!!!!!
4 sent home for beating parent, child at school. Posted: 2009-11-20 10:27:00 AM
what is going on in this country, i blame the parents of the 4 children. Please parents grow up your children in the Lord.
Parent Beaten Posted: 2009-11-20 05:34:00 AM
The fact that it is stated that the parent provoked the attack, is what is wrong with TnT. One the parent should not be trying to fight with teenagers and it is never okay for teenagers to attack adults and state that they were provoked. This is disgusting by all accounts.
Charges should also be laid against these students. Posted: 2009-11-20 12:10:00 AM
These students who attacked this parent and his child should not only be suspended but also be charged by police for causing serious bodily harm and assault. I see a school official is saying that the parent may have provoked the attack; no school official should support the rogue behaviour, which these students carried out on that day. If this man had done something wrong the students should have asked the guard to call the police or the matter should have been reported by the school officials immediately to the police. Students cannot take the law into their own hands. I see none of the teachers walking by, intervened to stop the students or called the security guard or police to stop this beating. I am beginning to wonder what kind of teachers are there in this school. Overall the guard should be fired for not prevent this beating or calling the police for help. Had these student killed this man and his daughter, I wonder, who would be blamed?

4 sent home for beating parent and daughter Posted: 2009-11-20 1:08:00 PM
The eye witness said the driver was pulled out of the car by the students/assailants.The school official said he (the driver)should not have left the car. His daughter was crying out for help to the teachers and the security guard and no one intervened. How sad, how cowardly, how incensed to read! I know what I will do if it was me and my daughter.
parent and child beaten Posted: 2009-11-20 11:40:00 AM
We are not finding the root of the problem.Remember "charity begins at home"
4 sent home for beating parent Posted: 2009-11-20 1:22:00 PM
Accidents do happen. In this case, the parent came close to hitting the pupil but did not. There is absolutely no reason for this kind of retaliation by students, including girls?. Since these are the future generation of tomorrow, we should be very concerned. The late Dr. Eric Williams was well ahead of his time when he put the Watchwords together , "Discipilne, Production and Tolernace". At home and at school children/students should be taught these values. The leaders of the country are failing to recognize and develope a proper direction for tomorrow's future generation.
It should have been me... Posted: 2009-11-20 1:40:00 PM
Let them unruly disrespectful students try that on me nah...I would've had them all "disciplined" one by one.
Students Posted: 2009-11-20 12:38:00 AM
Are these students training to become professional criminals? It seems as if we are saying suspension is satisfactory punishment for actions that would have resulted in criminal prosecution if they were not wearing school uniforms at the time. This should be a criminal matter. It seems as if these "young gentlemen" believe the correct response to anyone who accidentally invades their space is to issue a beating. This is just the beginning light punishment lets them believe that their actions are being condoned.
Criminals Posted: 2009-11-20 3:20:00 PM
This School is clearly raising criminals and the School officials are truly advertising it to the media with their comments about the parent should of left and come back, so I guess the students in that School will surely get a medal for the outstanding behaviour they performed and was backed by the School officials.
