Cumana driver dies in pre-dawn crash

A POINT CUMANA MAN is the country’s latest road fatality after he died on arrival at the Port of Spain General Hospital after slamming into a concrete barricade.

Dax Beckles was heading home in his Nissan Tida when his car slammed into the barricade near the International School, Westmoorings.

Beckles, 32, of Senora Park, Point Cumana, had recently returned to Trinidad after spending time in the United States and Canada.

According to reports around 4.45 a.m. Beckles was heading west along the Western Main Road when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the barrier.

Beckles is said to have been thrown out of the driver’s window as the car veered into a nearby ditch.

Four Roads Police Station are continuing investigations.

Beckles’s death brought the road fatality figure for the year so far to 179.

This accident seems as though the driver was speeding. If one look carefully at the way these drivers in Trinidad drive, it is a miracle that more people are not killed. He was thrown out of the window on impact. That alone shows speed. He should be checked to see if he was drunk or on drugs. This is a very sad state for his family to be in right now, with the holiday season nearing. I hope God grant them comfort in this time of their grief.
Seat Belts Posted: 2009-11-23 07:59:00 AM
From the statement "...said to have been thrown out of the driver's window..." I can only assume that Mr Beckles was not wearing a seatbelt. Until the seatbelt laws are obeyed and enforced the death toll on our roads will not be reduced. It would be good if newspaper reports stated whether those killed in road accidents were or were not wearing seatbelts, and if children were strapped into car seats. My deepest sympathies to Mr Beckles' family and friends.
Road Carnage Posted: 2009-11-23 04:14:00 AM
I wonder if this road carnage is alcohol related???Four unfortunate deaths in a week, Mr Narace could you share some light as to this seeing that you made a point that alcohol was the main cause of road accidents?
