First cruise ship arrives

SAILING IN: A Coast Guard vessel patrols as the cruise ship Serenade of the Seas makes its way to the dock at the Port of Port of Spain yesterday. -Photo: JERMAINE CRUICKSHANK

Dozens of people gathered at the Waterfront near the Hyatt Regency Trinidad in Port of Spain yesterday to get a glimpse of one of the two cruise ships leased for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) later this week.

The ship Serenade of the Seas cruised into the Port of Port of Spain, just adjacent to the Waterfront, to the welcoming sounds of the our country’s national instrument, the steel pan.

Those aboard the vessel showed off their singing skills as the ship pulled in as they belted out, in sync, ’Ole-Oh-le-Ole-Oh-le-Ole-Oh-le-Ole-Oh-le, feeling hot hot hot’.

One onlooker remarked that although they were behind time, that could not have stopped the jubilant passengers aboard the third Radiance-class ship in Royal Caribbean’s fleet, which can hold up to 2,100 passengers.

Onlookers snapped pictures with their digital cameras and camera phones as the ship pulled in around 5.45 p.m.

’Daddy, look a big boat,’ one child exclaimed as the Serenade of the Seas pulled in while three Offshore Patrol vessels patrolled the waters.

The ten-storey ship is one of two cruise ships leased by the Government to host the Commonwealth Business Forum this week.

It does not matter how jubilant they are feeling, they need to be wary. Trinidad is not the place to let your guard down. To the visitors, I say , please be careful. I hope that each of you go back to your families alive. You have just entered the #1. murder capital of the world. Second only to Columbia.

well done TnT Posted: 2009-11-23 00:42:00 AM

Coast Guard patrols...waste of precious time and good resources Posted: 2009-11-22 7:11:00 PM
The Coast Guard Boat and crew would have served a better purpose if they were on the high seas keeping an eye out for drug smugglers and gun runners, and also giving our fishermen some confidence as they ply their precarious trade. The cruise ship and occupants are safe and snug as a bug on a rug. I am ashamed to ask what was the cost for leasing those ships, so I won’t. Lloyd C. Johnson US Army Retired, Germany

That don't impress me much. First clean up the crime situation. Then I will sing a happy song and get excited. My people are hurting.

My aunt has been waiting for almost 2 days now in pain, at the hospital, to see a doctor. Is it possible that we can use the PNM's "ole, ole" cruise ship doctor, to help out these patients, in the meantime? Or, since the PNM government does not have any money to fix the hospitals, maybe we can use some of the funds from their special "fete" budget

We have to tighten our belts, to pay for these cruise ships. Let's all hope that the PNM government members get our money's worth, and party hard on this ship. Hopefully, there will be news media clips of finance Minister Karen Nunez showing us some of her latest dance moves, before she also moves in Parliament, to enforce her new property tax upon us, to pay for all this CHOGM pomp and glamour - Concerned Taxpayer
When will the bitching and crying stop. Posted: 2009-11-23 12:35:00 AM
All I hear is the bitching wailing and crying. Why dont these people who write petition the govt to shut down carnival. Look how much this will help productivity at the hospitals to help so many people. I guess at carnival its. no problem we wineing, we partying, we weeeeing. anything else is a PROBLEM.

If bitching and whining was a crime in T&T alot of you would've been in jail seems like their are no postive thing can be said about T&T any more before you complain wait and see if an good comes out of CHOGM.

Okay then, let's see if we can list anything "positive" from the last Summit this year, Hmm!, let's see, more wasteful taxpayer debt incurred by the PNM government, for our grand children to repay, sounds positive?
OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL TRINBAGONIANS Posted: 2009-11-23 2:36:00 PM
It will be appropriate for all citizens to visit these cruise ships. This way, they can see how their money is sailing away, into the arms of others. Then in 2012,hopefully they will remember, where their money went.Aubert Modeste
