PM: Key decisions in PoS
'World's fate could be decided'

A large part of the world’s fate could be settled right here in Port of Spain in the next few days.

Last night while giving his official opening address at the Commonwealth People’s Forum at the Queen’s Hall in Port of Spain, Prime Minister Patrick Manning attested to the colossal challenge he will be taking on as chairman of this year’s Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Port of Spain.

CHOGM will be the last opportunity for some of the world’s biggest players to thrash it out before the United Nations-sanctioned global climate change talks begins in Denmark on December 7.

During his speech Manning addressed the now much debated topic of climate change and said: ’Our meeting in a few days is the last major gathering of world leaders before the meeting in Copenhagen, about which there is some pessimism regarding any significant result.’

He was referring to the fact that scientists say current greenhouse gas emissions must be cut by some 80 per cent if the world is not to overheat.

Manning said: ’As chair of this CHOGM, Trinidad and Tobago is working assiduously with other nations, in and out of the Commonwealth, to attain a position that is strong enough to advance the process toward a global agreement on this critical matter affecting all of humanity.’

He said the meeting, which will also include French President Nicolas Sarkozy and the host of the Copenhagen climate summit himself, Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen comes at a pivotal time in the world’s history, when decisions are not only shaped by the need to stymie climate change but when it is still reeling from the effects of an economic crisis which almost took the world to the ’precipice of financial ruin’.

Manning said: ’The fact that the UN Secretary General (Ban Ki Moon) ...will join us in our deliberations on this issue is an indication of the intensity of our (the Commonwealth’s) efforts.’

Mr Manning,, please do not toot your horn, let someone else do that for you. As far as the world's fate being decided in POS, that is bunk. Trinidad and Tobago are not just that important in the scheme of things where world politics are concerned. You may have forgoten how many people walked out on you while you were speaking at the United Nations. They were not interested in what you had to say then, and God only knows, they are not that interested in what you have to say now. If you want to play a part in the world, and an important part at that, pleif you want people to listen to what you are saying, please curb crime in your country. Nothing else will do.
Human-caused "climate change" Posted: 2009-11-22 5:12:00 PM
All concerned should be VERY CAREFUL of what they decide. Large numbers of scientists around the Globe do not agree with the "CO2 as villain" conclusion. They are largely being silenced by Politicians and various interests. BE VERY CAREFUL. Do not let the "Global warming due to CO2" tide swamp you.!!
Worlds Fate settle in Trinidad...Kinda scary isn't it... Posted: 2009-11-22 6:58:00 PM
Our Immediate problems are not the adverse effects of Climate changes, just our inability to provide the basic necessities for our Sustainment. Water, good medical service, and safety and security in the comfort of our homes and our society. One can only imagine what Trinidad and Tobago would be like if those challenges were accomplished. We can worry about Climate change later on in our history when we get there, but I think the emphasis should be placed on our present short falls. All those important leaders that are supposed to be coming here have already taken care of those problems in their respective countries many years ago and I am quite sure they are clueless as to our basic woes. At the end of this expensive meeting we will still be here stuck in the rut like we were since the last visit from President Obama, except for a new expensive shiny building, nothing has changed. These Important leaders coming here won’t change our situation. “God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, courage to change the things we can, and wisdom to know the difference”. Good Day!! Lloyd C. Johnson US Army Retired, Germany

Making an about turn! Posted: 2009-11-23 04:35:00 AM
Buh dis man hubris knows no bounds, oui! Now I believe as events change one will have to adapt to the changed circumstances. But Patrick caught in the tail-wind of climate change hurricane and buffeted about would want us believe he is the driving force behind the hurricane.
Forgetting the purpose of the CHOGM. Posted: 2009-11-23 03:33:00 AM
A while back at the Summit of the Americas, it was shuttle diplomacy. That failed when at the end of the day it was only Manning who signed the declaration. Now he is working assiduously with other nations towards climate change for the benefit of not only the Commonwealth but the whole world. Mr Manning the purpose of Messrs. Sarkozy and Rasmussen is try to influence little states from ganging up against them. They have not invited themselves for you to change their intent.
CHOGM Posted: 2009-11-23 04:05:00 AM
The Prime Minister recently said that the CHOGM will benefit this country in the future,I have not seen the benefits after the first CHOGM. What i have seen is the ego on his face whenever he appears in the media.
what a joke Posted: 2009-11-23 07:22:00 AM
the world's future? and yet Mr Maning is going full steam ahead with such environmentally dangerous projects like another steel mill and smelter projects? what a joke

PM: World's fate could be decided Posted: 2009-11-23 04:01:00 AM
Trinidad's fate has already been decided by this PNM's squandermania.
If Manning is concern about climate change, why is he building a smelter plant? Posted: 2009-11-23 09:20:00 AM
People all over the world with smelter plants are concern about the effects it has on their people and the climate but Manning is building one here. Now Manning is talking about climate control. You ever hear anything like that before?
A reformed polluter?? Posted: 2009-11-23 1:53:00 PM

Sure Mr.Manning, you and your invisible team of scientists will change the world in Port of Spain. By the way, did they get that stench out of Port of Spain as yet, or would that cost another 10 million to clean up
