Three men charged with attempting to kill a police officer and assaulting his pregnant wife were refused bail yesterday.
One of the accused is a 17-year-old boy.
The three appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington in the San Fernando First Magistrates’ Court.
Shirvan Brerton, Quamie Briggs, and the 17-year-old were charged with the attempted murder of Robert Henry, robbing his wife Lavern of $6,500 and using violence toward her. It was also alleged that they stole $196,600 in items from the couple, including a pick-up van, laptop, DVD player and jewelry. Henry was last attached to the Siparia Police Station.
The alleged incident occurred last Tuesday at his Crest Camp, Oilfield Road, Fyzabad home.
Yesterday, the men spoke on their own behalf.
Brerton, of Marabella, said he had no pending matters.
Magistrate Wellington ordered that a criminal background trace be done.
Briggs gave the court two addresses, which Wellington also ordered be checked. The teenager, of Marabella, gave his age as 17 years, but personnel at the Youth Training Centre said he was born in 1990.
’We need your birthpaper, you’re playing games,’ Wellington said.
Four more charges were read to the teenager.
It was alleged that on November 13, at Johnson Street, Gasparillo, he shot Brian Joseph with intent to do grievous bodily harm. It was also alleged he had in his possession .38 ammunition and a firearm with intent to endanger life.
In addition, it is alleged that on November 7, he and a 16-year-old boy robbed a woman of $200. The charge was also read yesterday that they committed grievous sexually assault and rape against the woman.
The 16-year-old of Marabella was represented by attorney Chateram Sinanan, who said his client had been in custody since last Monday. The teenager had a pending matter for attempted robbery.
Wellington remanded him and the 17-year-old to the YTC to return on December 4 for some of the cases. The offences against Henry were transferred to the Siparia Magistrates’ Court for hearing tomorrow.
