Three killed
...during shootout with cops

AFTER shooting a police officer and attempting to steal the unmarked police car that he was driving, three men were shot dead by police yesterday.

Dead are suspected car thieves Akeem Wayne, 25, of Mahaica, Point Fortin, Omari Wiltshire, of La Brea, and Eneka Harry, of Second Caledonia, Morvant.

The trio were killed moments after they are alleged to have shot a police constable Corey Mendoza in a failed attempt at stealing the car he was driving. Mendoza was in an unmarked white Nissan Almera motorcar used by police.

The string of events which led to the killings all began around 12.15 yesterday morning, while Mendoza was driving along the Eastern Main Road (EMR) in Laventille.

Mendoza, who works with the Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU), which is located at the Port of Spain CID, was on his way home at the time of the incident.

During the drive east along the EMR, a gold-coloured Nissan Almera motorcar tried to force Mendoza off the road.

Two occupants of the gold-coloured Almera are said to have brandished guns in Mendoza’s direction. Mendoza then pulled out his service pistol. The men opened fire and Mendoza was shot in his back. The bullet exited through Mendoza’s abdomen.

Mendoza returned fire and the car sped off in an easterly direction along the EMR. Mendoza then called for backup.

Officers of the North Eastern Division Task Force (NEDTF) on mobile patrol in the area responded to Mendoza’s call for help. The gold-coloured Almera was found driving along Sixth Avenue in Barataria.

The group of NEDTF officers tried to stop the car, but were shot at. The officers returned fire.

All three of the car’s occupants were shot. They were all pronounced dead on arrival at hospital. The car the trio were travelling in was seized by police.

Mendoza was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Port of Spain General Hospital. He underwent emergency surgery and up to last night was said to be in a stable condition.

Commissioner of Police, James Philbert and his Deputy Commissioner of Police, Gilbert Reyes, were at the scene of the fatal shootings yesterday.

Investigations are continuing.

Three killed Posted: 2009-11-29 9:25:00 PM
That is the way to deal with criminals. I wish they were all dead so that Trinidad can once again become the pardise it once was. These thugs are nothing but parasites who prey on the innocent. Score one for the Police. No need to take them alive, to waste tax payers money to try them. They have been tried swiftly in the court of heaven and have been found wanting. Good riddance to bad rubbish. This makes me feel real good.
Oh! I like the ending!! Posted: 2009-11-29 4:52:00 PM
That should be a lesson for other would-be car thieves, little did they know what they were going to deal with.

I am indeed happy to read that the cop in question was alert enough to return fire and call for backup. These crime indulgent characters are getting what they deserve. Clean up TNT of crimelords. Show them whose in charge. Aunty B'klyn NY

Three down, dozens more to go. God be with you Mr. Mendoza, speedy recovery. That's one of the best piece of crime fiting news I have read that's positive, so far. Time to bring back a safe Trinidad. Get those guns off the streets! crime does not pay. god bless and keep the protective services and keep them safe.
Well Done!!! Posted: 2009-11-29 11:17:00 PM
I'm glad to see that the police are fighting fire with fire (gun fire that is). Mr Philbert is doing a fantastic job and should be commended. Shoot first and then ask questions should be the directive issued.

You live by the gun, you die by the gun.
WELL DONE OFFICER MENDOZA...WELL DONE! Posted: 2009-11-30 02:59:00 AM
There is not much to say here but to admire the courage of this Police Officer who reacted as he was trained to react to craven Criminals who thought that they had another TNT citizen in their sights but instead it was a well trained and courageous TNT Police Officer who did what he is paid and trained to do! Well done Officer Mendoza well done! I now call upon the decent and Law abiding Citizens and Residents of TNT to show our gratitude and appreciation to this Police Officer and the Police Service by donating whatever we can to a valid charity ( the Red Cross,Salvation Army,The Orphanages ) in the name of Officer mendoza and send a " Get Well" Card to the CID to this Officer. Yes this is new to you folks but that is okay because we never, ever, had such a vicious crime wave dumped on us by these nasty criminals before and the Police will bring them down one by one and two by two! The Fearless TNT Republican.
Great Job Posted: 2009-11-30 04:52:00 AM
Wonderful, this shot officer is my hero. I pray for his speedy recovery. Take them down without hesitation let their families come forward and say how they were good boys, allow us to see their families faces. As an Almera owner and a victim of car jacking I thank this officer for his bravery and courage.

Three killed Posted: 2009-11-29 10:57:00 PM
Oh, Thank you God. Thank you God that this police officer is alive today. All praise to the Almighty that the evil-doers were vanquished. They are in a better place right now because obviously this world was too good for them. May their rotten navel strings have no peace, EVER.
Great job... Posted: 2009-11-30 03:58:00 AM
Good job by the officers once again. I am hoping this sort of response will restore some level of obedience to the laws of the land. We must be mindful that desperate times call for desperate measures. What about the guys on death row? We should start cleaning up shop. (When we have humans in society we can let human rights fundamentalists have their say) I challenge any one of them to represent a man who has murdered, raped and tortured his family. Let Trinidad be restored to a peaceful nation where we can live safely again. Thank you
Three killed Posted: 2009-11-30 05:38:00 AM
Great news. Now this is the way I want to get up in the morning. Having these undersirable citizens off of the face of the earth, is the best news I've had since I learned that I was expecting a grandchild two years ago. In the last two years all I ever read in the morning is how low our society has sunk and how much the criminals are winning over the police and decent citizens in general. So I feel good. I can go to work this morning knowing that by the grace of God this situation did not end with another police officer being shot and killed. This is the adequate and appropriate end to this situation. We, as a nation should give thanks to police force for removing these scums of society from doing their dirty deeds one more time. I expect this behaviour from the low-life from Morvant, but now it seems we are importing low lifes from the south of Trinidad too. GOOD RIDDANCE.
Three killed - Early Christmas Gift Posted: 2009-11-30 04:18:00 AM
I consider the death of these three murderers an early Christmas bonus for the people of Trinidad and Tobago. These fellas don't want to work. They already have a car but they want another one and they don't want to work hard for it. Find the nest and burn out all the parasites. That is the solution to the problem of crime that we are experiencing in this country. They too damn greedy.
Tree killed in shout-out Posted: 2009-11-30 04:33:00 AM
Good Job to the Police.....Take these thugs out.
A police state in the making? Posted: 2009-11-30 06:15:00 AM

Good Response Posted: 2009-11-30 06:06:00 AM
Good job officers on the quick response to this unpleasant incident. All reported occurences should in the future be responded to quickly as in this case, so to get the people who are responsible for the it. S.Duncan
Shoot to kill Posted: 2009-11-30 03:00:00 AM
Excellent work guys! Don't bother wasting our tax paying dollars putting them in jail and having to endure long drawn out trials. Once they're caught in the act...shoot to kill! Keep it up!

Three shot dead Posted: 2009-11-30 08:38:00 AM
Maybe its just me, but after reading this story, I think there's a little more to it that the police haven't told. I still think its a good job though. That's three bandits off the streets.
It would be great if officers respond to all crimes this fast. Posted: 2009-11-30 10:15:00 AM
Its a great move by the police to take down these criminals but it would be better if they respond to the needs of all crimes with that urgency.
Very good Posted: 2009-11-30 04:00:00 AM
Well done by these officers
well done Posted: 2009-11-30 04:06:00 AM
it is sad but the policeman had no choice.Stealing has to stop. This may deter others from stealing, or at least for some time.Praise and prayers go out for the police man and his family and coworkers thank you sir.

COPS KILLED THREE Posted: 2009-11-30 09:25:00 AM
Frist speedy recovery to the cop that got shot. Good job for those who took out them three fools. There are more of them to take out. The jails is too full no room for harden criminals. These criminals is not just robbing people but also shooting at them and killing them too. I hate to say it but kill them frist before they kill innocent and hard working people for their belongings again thank to police force (the good ones) keep up the good work. Airborne Trini

Officers Posted: 2009-11-30 06:00:00 AM
The shot officer is a hero. Despite being seriously wounded, he was able to keep his composure, return fire and call for assistance. Excellent work also by the task force officers who stopped and "dealt with" the perpetrators. That's three less criminals on the street. Commendations to the officers are deserved all around.
NO PROBLEM WITH RESULTS OF POLICE SHOOTINGS Posted: 2009-11-30 07:41:00 AM
If the information as reported, are the facts,I do not have a problem with the polices'actions. However,it's the uncertainty of the officers telling the truth, that makes it difficult for all officers. That's why Officers must show support for those who are truthful and disassociate themselves from the corrupt and "shady officers"who makes their job impossible. It's never too late to start,or change behaviour. So do the right think at all times,to avoid being "picked on" by the public.Start to earn the trust of citizens today,if the citizens are expected to stand 100% behind you. This is for all Officers, good,or bad, start being truthful and straight-forward today.I would chance it and extend my congratulations for a job well done, even though it may be premature,at this time.Let me be more explicit,if all Officers do their part honestly and humanely, all the citizens would be behind you, even the perpretrators and their families.Aubert Modeste

Good job police officers. Kill them out one by one.
THREE KILLED Posted: 2009-11-30 1:01:00 PM
Good to hear the officer is in a stable condition. Seems as though there is a network of criminals in TnT. Hence the areas the three killed were from, La Brea, Point Fortin and Morvant. Where did these three meet at work?
well done Posted: 2009-11-30 12:10:00 AM

DEAL WITH ODDS MR.CoP Posted: 2009-11-30 3:34:00 PM
If the probability were greater that a bandit would come up against an armed citizen, when they attack;that is what would make the difference. So this is a good baseline to measure, whether you should arm all qualified members of the Protective Services,or not.If 1 out every 5 times a bandit attempts to rob someone,he is met with a hail of gunfire,if appropriate, they would change their employment(robbing and killing citizens).Crime has become these people employment, since Manning took over.I wonder why? Only because it was a police officer Posted: 2009-11-30 3:57:00 PM
The only reason they acted so quickley is because it was a police officer who got shot. If that was me or some other civillian the headlines would have read, "Man Shot Assailants Fled Scene, Police Are Continuing Ivestigations".
Good job! Posted: 2009-11-30 4:26:00 PM
Who really cares what is the real story, they shooing at police, they get what they deserve. Oh, and police don't train to shoot at car tire....and why the bandit them didn't shoot the officer car tire instead of shooting him in his back?
