All Hail T&T
Leaders sing PM's praises after successful CHOGM

'MEETING A SUCCESS': Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Patrick Manning, left, South Africa President Jacob Zuma, centre, and New Zealand Prime Minister John Key during a media conference after the final session of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting at the Hyatt Regency in Port of Spain yesterday. Trinidad and Tobago and Prime Minister Patrick Manning received lavish praise yesterday.

This was the unanimous view expressed by attendees at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Port of Spain, as the curtain came down on the event at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Port of Spain.

Climate change dominated the talks, but as Commonwealth leaders bade farewell, the spotlight was favourably placed on the people and Government of Trinidad and Tobago and there was an expression of satisfaction from big and small countries alike.

The conference was deemed to be an unqualified success because: a) the Commonwealth welcomed a new member to its family-Rwanda; b) accord was reached on climate change, which, to quote Manning, would have ’more than a small influence’ on the summit in Copenhagen; c) there was a reaffirmation of the principles and values of the Commonwealth and; d) for the first time the Commonwealth associated itself with non-Commonwealth personalities who came to Port of Spain for the event. These included French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak said the conference gave the lie to the claims of the sceptics that the Commonwealth as an institution was no longer relevant.

’This CHOGM has truly answered that...I go home with a feeling that the Commonwealth can meet the global challenges...and that there is so much camaraderie...making this summit hugely successful,’ he said.

Australia Prime Minister Kevin Rudd agreed, saying that the level of camaraderie, the give and take in the Commonwealth, was not easily replicated in other international organisations. But he noted, ’The challenge is to apply that great spirit, goodwill and preparedness to speak with one single voice and the spirit of collaboration...to the great challenges of global politics, global security...global economic management and financial reform, trade as well as development and the great and overwhelming challenge of climate trade.’

Said Rudd: ’The task is to take this credible institution...and apply it to the global agenda of the day.’

He stressed that that was successfully done with the PoS Climate Change Consensus document.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key noted that the meeting ’was extremely well run, so I want to congratulate you, (Manning)’, though he noted the Commonwealth faced new challenges in relation to countries like Fiji and Zimbabwe.

South African President Jacob Zuma hailed the manner in which the Commonwealth dealt with climate change issues, pointing to the presence of non-Commonwealth leaders at the meeting. Noting that he had been asking what impact the Commonwealth was making (before this meeting held), he said: ’I am very happy... Small, middle and big were able to hammer out views...with a communique that captured our feelings. This CHOGM has responded to issues very correctly. We go home very happy indeed.’

Papua New Guinea President, Sir Michael Thomas Somare, said the meeting was good for island states of the Caribbean, West and East Africa and the Pacific and South East Asia.

’There are nations in the world who may not be serious about what is happening to us. In Papua New Guinea, ...islands are coming under the water ... This conference made it possible for our voice to be heard. So I am going with a very happy mind... PoS will go down in history,’ he said, adding that this was one of the best CHOGMs he had attended.

Manning got kudos from all for his chairmanship of the meeting.

Rudd spoke of the ’quality’ of this chairmanship, while Samoa Prime Minister. Tullaepa Lupesaolal Sallele, thanked him for his ’inspired’ choice of the group of wise men to hammer out a draft text on the climate change issue, for his ’gentle persuasion and appeals to common sense’ and ’when all else failed’, for his ’laying down the law’. He also praised the cultural show at the opening, saying that the ingenious use of the discarded steel drum was a good example of recycling, as well as a good way to help young people develop an appreciation for group involvement.

Manning himself thanked all for their kind sentiments and he expressed his appreciation to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.

This is Trinidad and Tobago’s second international conference this year. Though its declaration was signed only by Manning, the chairman, the Fifth Summit of the Americas was hailed by participants for ushering in a new spirit of cooperation among the states of the Americas, particularly the US and Latin America. The Commonwealth meeting was equally hailed for the consensus on climate change.

All leaders hail Manning but not the citizens of his country.
All hail T&T? Posted: 2009-11-30 01:50:00 AM

It's Free for them Posted: 2009-11-30 02:08:00 AM
I wonder if all these leaders knew that CHOGM costs so much money and we have to sleep on floors in hospitals here,we have no water and we are murdered like animals.
Yeah right Posted: 2009-11-29 9:39:00 PM
Yeah all of them will sing this song because none of them did not foot the bill.CHOGM finish and Trinidad and Tobago's problems are solved and all of us will live happily ever after now. Reminds me of the Olympics after the ceremony is finished the president of the IOC always says it was the best one ever.
Re: Yeah right Posted: 2009-11-30 4:53:00 PM
Would you rather the World talk about crime in Trinidad and all the Killings???? What's wrong with having Trinidad up on the World Stage, Again!!! with world heads of state????? it will take a while to clean up the mess anywhere in the world, even in Trinidad, everything takes time, those same heads of state that visted Trinidad would have made yet again, very good political friends in the political arena of Trinidad and Tobago, they will be scratching each other backs now and in the future, no other Caribbean country have that kind of clout, like Trinidad. BE PROUD OF YOUR COUNTRY AND STOP BEING NEGATIVE!!!!!!
Contribution Posted: 2009-11-30 03:08:00 AM
Plese Sir,Would you elaborate on the contribution made and the outcome of small state countries like Mauritius,Seycelles and Fiji Island in the (CHOGM)conferrence? Thanks..

Praies!! TO T@T Posted: 2009-11-30 02:38:00 AM
People of trinidad and tobago we are on our way to first world it's not to far away, stop the killing, the world is looking at us. within six months about eighty world leaders came to our shore's this year to see what we have to offer the world. trinidad host the second international conference, there is more to come. so let's all come together we can make if we try
Self-Serving for survival Posted: 2009-11-30 07:51:00 AM
Can we expect the attendees to say otherwise? They need to justify their own presence to thier respective constituents. As for Manning, canned, stock pre-meditated statements. Frankly, unimpressive because the fundamental question remains - How does T&T benefit from the cost to host the event?
PM Manning......Job well done Posted: 2009-11-30 01:58:00 AM
I stand proud to be a Trini today.....Job well done
A Great and Productive Conference Posted: 2009-11-30 08:07:00 AM
I am an American married to a Trini. I have been coming to TT since 1989. I read all newspapers daily whenever I a in Trinidad. I know just a little about the country. That is to say that the recently concluded Commonwealth Conference is one of the two most important conferences held in TT or the area. Maybe the most important because of the cross section of its attendees. My hat is off to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. A job well done. It is reason to be proud.
Re: A Great and Productive Conference Posted: 2009-11-30 12:45:00 AM
Well, you should learn more about Trinidad then you could comment.
All Hail T@T Posted: 2009-11-30 09:59:00 AM
Now Manning is big pappy, head nw go swell. I hope he will get cracking and attend to the other serious issues that are concerning the people of the country. Kudos
Well done Posted: 2009-11-30 11:17:00 AM
Well done by the Government and People of Trinidad and Tobago. Hats off to the Honourable Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, the Hon. Patric Manning for a job well done. I do hope that such achievement bring great social and economic benefit to the Country and to people of Trinidad and Tobago.
Re: Well done Posted: 2009-11-30 2:22:00 PM
Are you seeing any fruits borne from the Summit that was held in April? Something should stand out from it.....wouldn't you say? Well this is another big show off by Mr. Manning.
All Hail to T&T Posted: 2009-11-30 10:19:00 AM
Very Well done. today I am proud to be a Trinidadian.
Re: All Hail to T&T Posted: 2009-11-30 2:55:00 PM
Well Mr. Manning must be paying you a good amount to say this. Today you would be proud to be a Trinidadian...and tomorrow what you be proud about? Would you be proud if you were the parent whose child was abducted and killed and/or never heard of again and you had to pay a find ransom? Would you be proud if bandits just walked in your house and took all your precious belongings and then just easily walked out or kill one of your family members? Would you be proud if you had to lie in the hospital corridor waiting to be attended by a nurse and to get a bed? WOULD YOU BE PROUD?...WOULD YOU....WOULD YOU? You know the list could go on. I hope you will really find something to be proud about than this egotistical view of Mr. Manning's.
CRASH COURSE BEFORE SUMMIT Posted: 2009-11-30 12:19:00 AM
I am not an expert(not sufficiently knowledgeable)in Climate change issues. But so is my P.M.,he made it so obvious to the average intelligent person. He spoke on the "surface" of this issue, which isn't surprising, based upon his record on the environment. His insistence on securing a smelter plant in T@T,when all the advance countries with similar industries are very concerned, because of the high level of carbon emitting agents.I wonder,if our esteemed P.M.honestly think that he has influenced these world leaders,or even fooled them, into beleiving that he knows what he is talking about. And worst,if he beleives that they are inspired,or that they actually believe ,that he believes in what he said.Climate Change and Environment issues were never Mr.Manning's priorities, until the delegation decided to place these issues on the "front burner" of the Summit's Agenda.I have never seen such contradictions in one person's content.Mr.Manning is not just making a fool of himself, but all the citizens of T@T.We must stop it now.I wonder if Mr.Manning knows,or even care that world leaders, always, mostly send "point-people" to evaluate a host country, before they arrive.I assure you, that these "point-people"will give a true and accurate report to their leaders, about the country,or countries they are reporting on.But Mr.Manning always think that he can fool everyone, regardless of how faulty, his knowledge,or presentation seems.Aubert Modeste
Re: CRASH COURSE BEFORE SUMMIT Posted: 2009-11-30 08:03:00 AM
You couldn't have said it better. And what a farce by our PM inflicting on our people!!!! Posters who agree with this CHOGM need to educate themselves before commenting. Those leaders I am sure were left with the impression that our PM is a stubborn man who seems to want his way, i.e. his determination to go on with the smelter plant and not the b......t about praising him. Then what was the reason for this meeting? Surely not to agree with him and his smelter plant determination?
All Hail? Posted: 2009-11-30 1:21:00 PM
I think that the T&T voting population should now know that Manning is better at hosting foreigners every Monday morning at taxpayers expense rather than looking after our beseiged nation. Remember, feast today and famine tomorrow!
WHAT ARE WE HAILING Posted: 2009-11-30 2:04:00 PM
The rest of the world now knows that TandT is a major culprit as far as carbon footprint goes? The picture on Canadian National Televisionwas smoke for so over Port of Spain with the LIghthouse in the background. It looked like the Beetham La Basse burning in the old days. So what are we hailing?
Re: WHAT ARE WE HAILING Posted: 2009-11-30 2:58:00 PM
not to mentiond ,now they know first hand how much crime in t&t that manning have to shut down the place ,give a holiday to guarantee their safty .No where else in the world Your Royal Highness go and it was declared a holiday ? NO WHERE ??? Manning rather t&t look like a ghost town and he could show off all he fancy building with no interuptions ,than the queen see all the misery in t&t ....
All Hail T&T Posted: 2009-11-30 2:57:00 PM
How ignorant can you be? We are aware of all the problems in T & T, but give praise when it's worth it. So many negative comments, if you as parents will do your job & instill good values in your children half of the problems & crimes will be solved.
Re: All Hail T&T Posted: 2009-11-30 11:12:00 AM
Thankyou at last someone seeing what i am seeing please you'll not tiead of all the bad news lest's injoy the good when we can please.! T&T in ATL
All hail Manning Posted: 2009-11-30 4:52:00 PM
Hail Manning for being a good cover up. Only squandering the citizens money and doing absolutely nothing for the benefit of the citizens of T and T where crime is concern. Spend money to educate the Police Force. Penalize officers for using the service cars to take out their wives and women. Ever wonder why the police station never have vehicles?
Well Done Posted: 2009-11-30 3:23:00 PM
I say well done to PM Manning and T&T. We are proud of our country and Governments management of CHOGM.
RE ALL HAIL T&T Posted: 2009-11-30 3:24:00 PM
Ever hear about people not bathing and putting clean clothes and perfume. That is exactly what Manning doing to the country. Give praise yes but people are fed up and frustrated you are out of place to questions peoples values here. Surely your tune will change should be directly affected by crime and have to put up with the Prime Ministers plasters.
Politicians of course Posted: 2009-11-30 4:39:00 PM
The participants have to hail the success of CHOGM. In this time of financial turmoil their people would be asking why they spent so much money to travel so far, even if this money is a fraction of what T&T spent. The President of Malawi did not attend because he has limited himself and his ministers to no more than 6 trips abroad a year. And he was elected with about 60% of the vote. A lesson there somewhere.
summary of event Posted: 2009-11-30 1:17:00 PM
well i decided to read the comments that everyone made here. My analysis is quite unfortunately those who spoke in favour of the event did not clearly substantitate why they saw this as a success whereas those who didn't support the event presented several reasons why they think it will not be successful. What I can say is that those against are ahead of those in favour and to me the argument they make seems to be reasonable. That the society is hurting and that the politicians are more concerned about their international image and using tax payers dollars to do so
