OVER the weekend three men were killed on the nation’s road.
The first of the three road fatalities took place around 10 p.m. on Saturday when 59-year-old Diego Martin resident Arnim Snell was fatally knocked down while attempting to cross the Priority Bus Route (PBR) in Mt Lambert.
Snell who was struck by a black-coloured Nissan Almera motorcar died on the spot.
The second road fatality over the weekend was 42-year-old Paul Plaza of Hamilton Street, Old Bay, Maracas.
According to police reports Plaza was killed after his gold-coloured Nissan B-15 motorcar slammed into a white Isuzu three-tonne truck.
That accident occurred along the Eastern Main Road (EMR) in Guanapo, which is located east of Arima sometime around 8.30 a.m. on Sunday.
According to police reports truck driver, Sherwin Monsegue, of Never Dirty, Morvant was along the EMR when he noticed a car swerving toward him.
Monsegue told police he pulled on the grassy shoulder along the roadside to avoid any accident. However, the car still collided with the truck, Monsegue said. Plaza died on the spot.
Investigating officers believe that Plaza may have fallen asleep at the wheel of the car.
The last of the three fatal road accidents took place along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway near Demerara Road in Wallerfield around 6.45 p.m. on Sunday.
According to police reports Brent Harry, of Village Street, in Cumuto was driving a white Nissan B-15 in an easterly direction along the highway when he attempted to make a right turn onto Demerara Road.
Nazool Ali, 49, who was riding a motorcycle heading West along the highway collided with the rear of Harry’s car.
Ali, of John Eli Road, Freeport, sustained serious injuries after being thrown from his motorbike.
He was taken to the Arima Health Facility and later transferred to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC) where he succumbed to his injuries around 11.20 p.m.
The country’s road fatality figure now stands at 182 for the year.
