Beneficiaries:

Government Senator Laurel Lezama benefitted from a total of $300,000 in State financial assistance from the Culture and Gender Affairs Ministry for the pursuit of a Bachelors degree in law and politics from the University of Westminster Regents Campus in London in 2005 and 2006.

This was disclosed in the list of grant recipients from ministry that was made public on November 9, through legal action by the Indo-Trinbago Equality Council (ITEC).

In an interview with the Express last evening, Lezama said that she had to go through a rigorous screening process before her application was approved and thought the financial assistance offered by the ministry was public knowledge.

Lezama said she did not receive a single cent from the money personally.

’It went to the university. It didn’t cover all of my expenses,’ Lezama said.

Asked about concerns raised by ITEC that the grants amounted to political discrimination, Lezama said, ’I don’t believe that it was specifically to party people at all. When I went to the interview, I did not know any person there. ... It was people who clearly had needs. I spoke to one young lady from Debe, a slim, slim girl of East Indian descent. From our conversation she clearly was not any form of political activist.’

Paige De Leon, who is the communications manager with the Office of the Prime Minister, received $173,640 in financial assistance in pursuit of her Masters in International Diplomacy at a university in Paris, France, in 2005 .

De Leon told the Express yesterday she had applied to several institutions including the ministry before her application was approved and, like Lezama, said ’no money was ever given’ to her directly.

What was the criterior for this grant. Posted: 2009-11-30 9:16:00 PM
I would like to know what was the criterior for this grant. Grants by the political party at the expense of the taxpayers is simply morally and ethically wrong, when the privilege ones with party connections are the only ones who can recieve such grants. Ms.Lezama should do the right thing and pay back this grant. It is the least she can do.
Grant Money well spent Posted: 2009-11-30 7:01:00 PM
What is really the purpose of this report other than to start a controversy about an individual who has done well for herself? I have known Senator Lezama for over a decade and she has more integrity, honor and patriotism than one can imagine. Here is an individual who set her goals to the utmost and worked hard to be where she is today. She is Senator at 29 years old and has a law degree? Why is this not praised or looked upon with admiration. If she got to where she is with the help of grant money well so be it.. It was money WELL spent. And what better way to give back to your country than as a public servant. Instead of looking for chaos and conflict we should show support and hold Senator Lezama in great revere for what she has accomplished. She did not come from a rich family and everything she has she earned. Together we aspired together we achieve. Proud of you Laurel Lezama.

If taxpayers'money is spent on each Senator or Political figure then we will be doomed. It's good that this senator has done well, but shouldn't it be more discreet than this. Maybe she is entitled to some benefit, but $300,000? I am sure there are more skeletons in the closet to come out.

It must be open for all to compete - based on academics and the like. Why do we have to hide and 'curryfavour' for some. Again - let them all compete in the open - no 'cloak and dagger' business. Also, what makes you think that someone else, once given the opportunity, could not have surpassed Lezama's accomplishments? It is a clear case of preferential treatment.
No conflict of interest??? Posted: 2009-12-01 05:10:00 AM
I do not know if the Government senator or the PM's communications manager are aware that it matters not that they did not receive money personally. Furthermore, while they say they went through a 'rigorour process' they must know that governments are bureaucracies and are the best at creating 'processes' to get to the intended outcomes. So while both may think they were treated fairly, there was a 'due process' that they had to undergo to appear to be transparent but in fact the decision-making is left up to a Minister who would have known the names of those persons who are negotiated to 'give back' to the party upon completion of their studies. If they do not know this, they are NOT deserving of either being a senator or PM's aide.
University Fees in France and Germany are the lowest in the world Posted: 2009-12-01 03:25:00 AM
Why would you need 173k to study in France when University fees are less than 5k annually? What was that money spent on? When do these ppl intend to repay the gov't for these "scholarships"?
No politics involved Posted: 2009-12-01 07:23:00 AM
Believe these peopl when they say that they did not speak up for themselves in order to get these scholarships. Indeed, others spoke for them. Why doesn't the government advertise the iformation about the scholarships so that others will apply for a fair chance??? acmd
Unnecessary uproar Posted: 2009-12-01 08:56:00 AM
While the two people mentioned in the article are currently working with the government, why did the article fail to provide details of the other recipients of scholarships? Here are two people from a list of however much who are actually working for the government. Since when is that a bad thing? What we should be saying is shame on the Express for only providing a piece of the details. What about those island scholars who took the money and have not returned? Have we said “have them pay back the country for the scholarships they were given”. No. Again, Trinidadians show their short-term memories by forgetting scholarships were also given to the students to pursue their medical degrees in Georgia. Lets not forget that we were introduced to these students during the conflict between Russia and Georgia. No one screamed “why are they getting scholarships?” Is the battle of these two individuals really worth it?
Trinidadians are the worst... Posted: 2009-12-01 2:38:00 PM
What does a Trinidadian not find a controversy in? So what if the govt is investing in its most important resource;its human capital. both these young women are now PUBLIC servants. The public being YOU. So its like we invested in our well being so give it a break!!!
University Fees in France and Germany are the lowest in the world??? REALLY?? Posted: 2009-12-01 10:51:00 AM
So you say university fees total $5000TT annually?? REALLY??...perhaps you mean $5000 Euros per semester...just by the way, a semester is a 'school-term' not a year! $173,000TT is about $18,000 Euros which is about $4,500 Euros per semester for a two yr (4 semester) Masters Program...which would be pretty much spot on. I don't see any exorbitance here. Maybe you need a gov't grant to go back to junior sec to re-sit Maths! Trini in Florida
