It was another sweltering afternoon of the rainy season. I happened to be close to a radio and it came at last. It was a media conference as strange as the burning heat in the midst of the rainy season.
Here was the Minister of Sport and his special purpose sports company chairman calling a media conference to achieve what exactly?
Mr Hunt made it clear they were here invading our airwaves to address ’misinformation by the media over the last week’ concerning a legacy flag at the National Stadium complex.
Well, as far as I can recall, last Thursday Mr Hunt was asked if the flag and related material and ’engineering’ cost the country and tax payers $2 million.
His response, we are bound to remember, was that if that was the cost, national pride is priceless.
His special purpose company (which operates under the general and specific directions of the Honourable Minister in law) issued a media release this week saying the flag (minus related engineering etc) cost over $18,000.
And, wham! Here was the Minister and his team correcting misinformation by the media by confirming that the flag, its pole and engineering, cost the consolidated funds into which all taxpayers’ money goes just about $2 million.
Mr Hunt then dissed the people of this country for not accepting projects immediately. But, don’t worry, they will eventually, he declared with utmost contempt for the intelligence of the people of this country.
After all, we could never understand this was not just a flag and a pole. We could never understand that a 130-150 foot pole would require a good foundation to stay put.
Mr Hunt, you just don’t get it do you? We are not fools. We are intelligent people who live life and understand a few things.
One thing we understand is that you as an elected parliamentarian and appointed Minister of Government are accountable to us the people for the expenditure for the money which belongs to us the sovereign people of Trinidad and Tobago.
It might confuse you that we also understand that you must not lie to the people and then try to pass off your disrespect for those you are supposed to serve with silly inventions about misinformation by the media or other lame excuses.
We understand that you and your special purpose company are the only ones who have engaged in misleading propaganda over the last week on this issue.
And, Mr Hunt, when you tell us we are nothing but a nine-day wonder people and we will accept your insults, lies and childish antics, you only pouring salt in the wound.
Do not treat us like a brainless mob, as your Prime Minister calls us when we oppose your government’s wrongdoings.
While you are at it, can you please explain why the lowest bidder was not given the contract to put up that flag. Is the Sports Company another Udecott? And since when is FireOne Fireworks a construction company with a track record (of one flag pole?)?
Sorry, Gary you just don’t get it about your responsibilities based on that oath that you reminded us you took to serve.
The contempt which you and your supporting cast unleashed on us for a whole week climaxing in your sickening media conference is despicable. One day, one day you will feel the vengeance of Moko for dissing the people so.
PS. Mr Hunt, let me share with you a simple lesson that I learnt in my Agricultural Extension Course 34 years ago. If you don’t know the answer to a question asked by simple people, it is no skin off your back to say I don’t know. I will get the information for you and get back to you.
A little humility will go a long way.
