Tsunami Meet attracts 180-plus

The St Michael Swimming Pool Facility in San Fernando will be the venue for the second meet of the 2009/2010 swimming season.

Tsunami Swim Club will host their second annual swim meet today with more than 180 of Trinidad and Tobago’s competitive swimmers from seven clubs registered to participate.

The St Michael Pool was the venue of the Stingray October Classic two weekends ago, when four national records were broken.

Eight and under male Kael Yorke of Tidal Wave Aquatics and teenage sensation Dylan Carter of Marlins are again expected to be in contention for record-breaking honours.

Yorke established records in the 50-metre freestyle and butterfly in his age group, while Carter eclipsed his coach Franz Huggins’ records in the 50 and 100m 11-12 events.

At the Stingray meet, many swimmers achieved qualifying times for the 2010 CISC and Carifta meets, including Jabari Baptiste, Keegan Boisson-Yates, Jonathan Gillette, Jason Rodriguez, Joshua Romany and Joel Sankar of Marlins, Napoleon Howell of Sea Hawks SC, and Jeron O’Brien and Syriah David of Tidal Wave and all are registered for this weekend’s meet.

This will be the second meet where the high-tech swim suit ban will be in force. Swim clubs were provided with further guidance on the suits they could use as a list was generated by USA Swimming following their ban.

However, local swimmers performed well without the use of the suits as 17 swimmers have already qualified for the Carifta Swimming Championships, scheduled for April 2010 in Jamaica, and/or the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships (CISC) in Cuba in July.

Some clubs have opted out of participating at this weekend’s meet to allow their swimmers, who have a packed calendar for the rest of the year, to rest.

Upcoming meets include the Torpedoes Invitational at Centre of Excellence (October 23-25); Tidal Wave East Zone and Secondary Schools meets at Centre of Excellence (November 1 & 8); National Open Short Course Championships in San Fernando (November 18-22); and the December Invitational in Westmoorings (December 10-13).
