Joe Public, Jabloteh to decide title

The 2009 Digicel Pro League season will mostly likely be decided between defending champions CLICO San Juan Jabloteh and current leaders Joe Public. And the top two contenders face their most important test of the campaign when they meet from 6 p.m. tomorrow at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya.

On Saturday, Jabloteh won a big clash with Caledonia AIA of Morvant-Laventille to move into contention.

The introduction of veteran Trinidad and Tobago midfielder and current national team coach Russell Latapy as a second half substitute failed to rally his Caledonia AIA team, who went down to a close 2-1 defeat to Jabloteh at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar.

After picking up full points, champs Jabloteh (45 points) leap-frogged AIA into second in the standings.

Latapy came on with 25 minutes to go and injected life into the Caledonia AIA attack by setting up two good chances, including one for Densil Theobald, who could not find a way past inspired Jabloteh keeper Cleon John.

’Our chances are slim now, but we are going to fight to the very end,’ AIA coach Jamaal Shabazz said after Saturday’s defeat. ’We have two matches left, against Joe Public on Saturday and then Defence Force the following Tuesday. I thought we played very well against Jabloteh, but simply did not take our chances. The difference between the teams tonight was Cleon John.’

Meanwhile, Pro League top-scorer Kerry Baptiste took his tally to 32 for the season when he netted a brace as Joe Public registered a 2-1 victory at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella, their first over 2009 First Citizens Cup champions Defence Force this season.

Baptiste is now just four goals off the record 36 which Jerren Nixon scored for North East Stars in 2004, with three league matches left in the season.

And falling out of contention were 2009 Caribbean Club champions W Connection, who struggled to break down a resilient Ma Pau defence and were held 0-0 at the Marvin Lee Stadium.

W Connection’s dominance was such that keeper Marvin Phillip had not a save to make in the match. And the W Connection camp were left peeved when they failed to win a penalty in the 35th minute, although their Dominican Republic striker Jonathan Frias appeared to be taken down by Ma Pau keeper Shane Mattis, when on a one-on-one run to goal.

The draw kept W Connection (41 points) still atop the Big Six competition, with two victories and a draw in three matches, but with just their two league matches left they can no longer surpass the 47 points which leaders Joe Public already have.

Instead, the Savonetta-based team will now concentrate on the CONCACAF Champions League where they face Real Espana (Honduras) in their final group match on Wednesday from 8 p.m. at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium.

Should they win, W Connection can qualify for the quarter-finals of the regional competition.
