Kristen Julien, gold medallist at the 2009 Carifta Games, obliterated a nine-year-old national record at Tsunami Swim Club’s second annual swim meet on Sunday at St. Michael’s Swimming Pool Complex in San Fernando.
Julien, a member of the host club, swam an impressive 1:07.51 in the 11-12 girls 100-metre backstroke, surpassing the old record by more than two seconds.
Multiple record-holder Ayeisha Collymore had also set her 11-12 100-metre backstroke record in October, in the year 2000, in a time of 1:09.59.
In the process, Julien also booked her tickets to Jamaica and Cuba as her time was the A standard for next year’s Carifta Games and Caribbean Islands Swimming Championships (CISC).
Dylan Carter continued in his record-breaking mode, adding two more records to his collection.
His first record came in the 200-metre freestyle where he touched the wall in 2:01.96, eclipsing the May 1999 record of Nicholas Bovell of 2:02.41.
Carter then went on to win the 100-metre backstroke in a record time of 1:04.14, beating the October 2004 time of 1:04.53 set by Walter Romany.
Carter also went on to win the 11-12 male age group overall title at the meet with 50 points.
Many of the swimmers who achieved qualifying times at Stingray’s meet two weeks ago maintained their standards and produced similar times.
The only new qualifier was Makayla Armstrong of Tsunami, who achieved a Carifta and CISC time in the 100-metre backstroke.
Swimming action continues this weekend at the Centre of Excellence, Macoya at the 19th annual Torpedoes Invitational.
This event is scheduled for October 23-25, with action starting at 5 p.m. on Friday.
