John-Williams, Howell splash to new records

TWO NEW MARKS: Kimberlee John-Williams

Kimberlee John-Williams of Blue Dolphins Swim Club and Napoleon Howell of Sea Hawks SC made new entries into the national swimming record book at Centre of Excellence, Macoya last weekend.

Their feats were accomplished at the 19th Torpedoes Invitational swim meet.

John-Williams’s first record at the Invitational was in the first event of the three-day meet as she established a new mark in the 13-14 female 400-metre freestyle.

Siobhan Cropper’s March 1993 record of 4:32.93 was no more as John-Williams touched the wall in 4:30.32.

The Southern lass continued her trend of record breaking in the second event she swam, speeding to a 30.37-second clocking in the 13-14 female 50-metre backstroke.

RECORD FOR SEA HAWKS: Napoleon Howell

Ayeisha Collymore established the previous record of 30.72 in March 2002.

The Blue Dolphins speedster then went on to swim 2:26.02 in the 13-14 female 200-metre butterfly, just nipping her own May 2009 record of 2:26.08.

Howell established the first-ever national record for his club, the newly-formed Sea Hawks, stopping the clock at 30.42 in the 15 & Over 50-metre breaststroke.

Abraham McLeod previously set the Open record of 30.54 in August, while representing Trinidad and Tobago at the 2009 Goodwill Swimming Championships in Barbados.

John-Williams and Howell have both already established times that saw them qualify for the 2010 CISC Championships in Cuba, and John-Williams for the Carifta Championships in Jamaica next year.

Four other swimmers added their names to the list of those who have made themselves eligible for CISC and/or Carifta, by virtue of achieving qualifying times at this meet.

They are Jonathan Ramkissoon of Sea Hawks SC, Laverne Maxwell of Olympians, and Blaine Sobrian and Stefan Sharpe of Marlins.

They join the list of other qualifiers who include Caryle Blondell, Cherelle Thompson, Rejan Chin and Kadeja Phillip of Blue Dolphins; Jabari Baptiste, Keegan Boisson-Yates, Jonathan Gillette, Jason Rodriguez, Joshua Romany and Joel Sankar of Marlins; Cadell Lyons of Petrotrin Barracudas; Bryanna Duncan of Sea Hawks SC; Jeron O’Brien and Syriah David of Tidal Wave; and Kristin Julien and Makayla Armstrong of Tsunami Swim Club.

Swimming action continues next week at the Centre of Excellence venue where Tidal Wave Aquatics host two schools’ meets.

On November 1, all primary and secondary schools from Barataria to Toco, and between Grand Bazaar and Couva are invited to participate in the East/Central Zone Schools’ Swim Meet.

One week later, all secondary schools’ will compete in the ninth annual Secondary Schools’ swim meet.
