THOSE who like short-and-rising favourites could have a field day on today’s seven-race card at Santa Rosa Park, Arima, where the feature event is the 1,200-metre Stud Farm Association (SFA) Breeders Stakes.
This $100,000 event is for locally-bred two-year-olds who passed through last year’s SFA Yearling Sale.
It brings together two very good juveniles, who are by freshman stallion A Great Team, Grand Riviere and Inconclusive, who finished an excellent second to Jamaica-bred Treasure Hunt two weeks ago in 1:05.81, which is the fastest time recorded by any locally-bred two-year-old on the main track.
Trainer John O’Brien, who is at Santa Anita for the Breeders’ Cup, sends out Grand Riviere, who cruised home in her debut, scoring unchallenged by 9 1/2 lengths in a good 1:01.2.
Last Sunday she trained with Chief’s Nephew and proved too strong for her older companion. She is definitely going the right way and it will take a very big performance from Inconclusive to lower her colours.
Inconclusive, who hails from the same barn as unbeaten juvenile Royal Baby, is making a quick turnaround for a filly, who tried valiantly to catch Treasure Hunt, and came up against something special.
Her time was very good and not many juveniles will come back in such quick time after such a big effort. She must be feeling the effect of that exertion, but her trainer Derick Mosca probably feels he has an easy opportunity for a paycheck and sends her out.
Defining Moment, a half-sister to multiple Graded Stakes winner Willing To Spend, was runner-up twice to Royal Baby and is the other runner who deserves respect. She is the most experienced of the bunch and is the only one in the line-up to travel over today’s trip.
She has been staying on stoutly, but unfortunately came up against a very good juvenile in Jamaica-bred Royal Baby.
Nad Al Sheba, who finished second to stablemate Grand Riviere on her debut, has 9 1/2 lengths to make up and that is some asking.
There isn’t anything special among the other runners and they should not be feared.
Look no further than Grand Riviere to score from Inconclusive, Defining Moment and Nad Al Sheba.
The day’s opener should be a very good guide for punters and should go the way of speedy Music Maestro, who will have most to fear from either Trust N Confidence and Filcher, who was well considered but disappointed in the 1,200-metre Stewards Cup prep last week.
Filcher, who raced with lasix in Calder, had his first use in T&T last Saturday and did not fire. Some horses do not usually fire first time with lasix, but are usually better the second time around.
Trust And Confidence has the speed and could enjoy the uncontested lead he needs to be effective.
However, Music Maestro is down in the weights and should get home ahead of Filcher and Trust N Confidence.
The 1,600-metre Conditional Handicap ’A’ on the turf is down to four runners if it stays on the grass as Heidi Go Blue, Salute The Colours and Tap To The Tune failed the veterinary inspection yesterday.
High Dollar Harry always seems to get one going better, but should not have that problem in this company. He should get home ahead of Riches Abound, Seal The Deal and Aintmisbehavingyet.
And live Breeders’ Cup action will be carried at Santa Rosa Park with unbeaten filly Zenyatta taking on the best colts in the Classic.
Post-time for the day’s opener is 1.05 p.m.
