NATIONAL indoor skipper Kelly Billingy will be making her regional debut on the sand today when Trinidad and Tobago will be represented by six pairs in the second and final leg of the Sizzling Sand Beach Volleyball Series in Barbados.
Billingy, one of the most clinical attackers in the region for close to a decade, will combine with Andrea Davis in the two-day tournament.
Davis was crowned national champion with Nancy Joseph-national champ for the last six years-in 2005 and 2006, but took a break from the game and has competed sparingly since she returned about a year ago.
When Davis’ absence began in ’07, Joseph joined forces with Elki Philip and this tandem is now the No. 1-ranked pair in the English-speaking Caribbean.
The three-time defending national champs are determined to go all the way in Barbados this time after finishing runners-up in the previous two years.
Philip and Joseph won the first stage of this series in Antigua last year, but were unable to defend their title early last month because they were competing in a NORCECA (North, Central America and the Caribbean) tournament in Mexico.
National runners-up Nadiege Honore and Ayanna Dyette, former top indoor players who both recently completed studies in the United States along with Billingy, are T&T’s other girls in the tournament.
The top two male pairs from last month’s National Championships will also be competing, along with national indoor skipper Nolan Tash and his partner, national indoor coach Gideon Dickson.
Fabien Whitfield and Daneil Williams, who like Joseph and Philip competed in the NORCECA tour this season, beat David Thomas and Simon Blake in an all-Toco affair for the national title.
Players will be battling for US$5,000 over the weekend.
