INCONCLUSIVE dug deep in mid-stretch to get the better of more experienced Defining Moment in yesterday’s showcase 1,200-metre Stud Farm Association (SFA) Breeders Stakes at Santa Rosa Park, Arima.
The chestnut daughter of A Great Team/Dreams Of Glory, trained by Derick Mosca for owner Juan Mosca and ridden by Venezuelan Richard Perez, prevailed by half-length from Defining Moment, Grand Riviere (odds-on favourite) and Sweetie Jan in a good 1:13, which was faster than the time (1:13.3) returned by Music Maestro in the day’s opener.
Coming off an excellent second to Treasure Hunt in a class record time of 1:05.81 two weeks ago, the filly, sent off as the second choice, overcame that exertion to score in good style.
Leaving the start, unraced Pure Zip was sharpest, but was quickly overtaken by Grand Riviere, Defining Moment and Inconclusive. Nearing the halfway stage, Defining Moment went ahead, with Inconclusive in hot pursuit and Grand Riviere toiling in their wake.
Defining Moment appeared to have stolen a march on her field, but Inconclusive was not going away and the race was on with Perez on Inconclusive and Keishan Balgobin on Defining Moment resorting to the whip to get the extra effort.
At the end of the ten-horse contest, Inonclusive proved stronger of the pair to give her stable, who took the Nursery Stakes with Royal Baby, another big win in the $100,000 showpiece, for two-year-olds who passed through the SFA’s 2008 Yearling Sale.
Turf racing was back on track yesterday after being cancelled last raceday when the course was too soft. This time the track was in perfect condition and in the first of the two mile contests Hurricane Lee scored a shade easily under Gary Laban for trainer Neale Greaves and new owner Shivam Maharaj.
In the other event, which only had four runners, Laban again was in winners’ enclosure, scoring aboard Justice Wendell Kangaloo’s Riches Abound for trainer Terrance Thomas.
And young apprentice Ronald ’Tiger’ Ali, who was returning from a suspension, remembered where the winning pole is by steering trainer Cyril ’Greypatch’ Arneaud’s oldstager Naturelly Classy to a half-length victory over Prince Lara.
That success, his 19th this year, put him two wins behind leading apprentice Nicholas Patrick (21), who was winless on the day.
In the day’s opener, trainer Glenn Mendez’s Music Maestro scored readily by four lengths under Chris Jadoo.
Racing action continues at Santa Rosa next Saturday.
