Britain’s Justin Rose and Sweden’s Mathias Gronberg shared the third round lead with Americans Justin Leonard and George McNeill at the Disney Classic at Lake Buena Vista in Florida yesterday.
The quartet head into today’s final round on 13-under-par at 203, but the competition is wide open with a total of 13 players within three shots of the lead.
Among those in contention is Trinidad and Tobago’s Stephen Ames, who is in a six-way tie for eighth at ten-under 206, three shots off the lead.
Ames carded a five-under 67-which included six birdies and a single bogey-yesterday to make a big move up the leaderboard from a share of 23rd overnight, after previous rounds of three-under 69 and two-under 70.
With 17 birdies to his name, Ames is tied for second in that category, while he is tied for sixth in putting with an average of 27.3 putts after three rounds, with 27, 29 and 26, respectively.
Of the leading four it was Gronberg who delivered the most impressive round yesterday with a six-under 66.
’It was nice. I played pretty good the front nine. I didn’t make a couple of possible birdie putts that I had.
’But the back nine was great. I just kept my head down and focussed on the pack of trying to make some birdies and catch some players,’ he said.
Gronberg shared the best score of the day with American Will MacKenzie who pushed himself into contention two shots off the lead.
Rose is searching for his first victory on the PGA Tour in his 149th start and it is more than two years since he went into the final day on the tour with the lead or a share of it.
’It is about not thinking that you’re leading because I certainly don’t see any pressure out there tomorrow,’ said Rose.
