CHOGM Sports Breakfast tomorrow

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) Sports Breakfast will be held tomorrow (Saturday), at the Trinidad Hyatt, from eight a.m.

In a press release, yesterday, Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (T&TOC) secretary general Brian Lewis said the T&TOC and the Commonwealth Games Association (T&TCGA) are ’pleased that the Sports Breakfast Meeting remains a relevant and important aspect of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

’People in the Commonwealth,’ Lewis continued, ’love sport. Its values--fitness, fair play, teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence--are universal. It brings people together.’

The T&TOC general secretary said sport is an effective social tool.

’Sport can be used in conflict resolution, employment creation, poverty alleviation, social integration, health promotion, life education, environment protection, combatting crime and drug abuse.

’Sporting success gives dignity, pride and self-respect. The potential of sport as a tool to reach personal, community, national and international development objectives is, however, still undervalued.’

Lewis attaches great importance to tomorrow’s meeting.

’The Sports Breakfast Meeting provides the opportunity for the sharing of thoughts and ideas as to the vital role that sport can play in the Commonwealth. It is an affirmation of Commonwealth Leaders’ appreciation for the role sport can play in the quest to meet sustainable development aims and objectives.’
