Trinidad and Tobago cyclists performed creditably at the UCI-sanctioned 2009 Pan American Masters Cycling Championships held earlier this month in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, placing third overall.
Trinidad and Tobago occupied third spot with 13 golds. Argentina were first with 23 golds, while Colombia finished runners-up with 21 golds.
The Championships saw some large contingents from the region, hailing from 17 countries, including Argentina, Aruba, Brazil, Canada, Chile, and Colombia.
Costa Rica, hosts Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guadaloupe, Mexico, Paragüay and Puerto Rico were also in the fray, while Trinidad and Tobago, the United States of America, Uruguay and Venezuela rounded out the competition.
T&T veteran Kent Luces led the way with four golden performances, as well as securing one silver and one bronze.
Godfrey Clyne was the next best for Trinidad and Tobago with two gold and two bronze medals, while Courtney Mark earned two gold and one bronze.
Everard Carter, father of top age-group swimmer Dylan, also contributed with two gold medals, while Ronald Peters reined in a bagful of medals, including two gold, four silver and one bronze.
The Trinidad and Tobago team was organised by Corkie’s Casuals and captained by Gerard ’Corkie’ De Gannes. It was the biggest cycling team to represent Trinidad at club and national level.
