A real iron man

Decades after some famous or even infamous event takes place people would ask the question, “Do you remember where you were when so and so took place?”

Concerning the life of South Africa’s great anti-apartheid fighter Nelson Mandela, I am inclined to ask, where were you when Nelson Mandela was released from prison? I and thousands of other “pan enthusiasts” would say that in the early afternoon of Sunday February 11,  1990 we were at National Panorama preliminaries with then Amoco Renegades getting ready to perform when the house announcer broke the dramatic and touching news that Nelson Mandela had been freed from prison.

Ironically, Renegades went on to win Panorama finals that year playing none other than Lord Kitchener’s “Iron Man”, in what could be regarded as a fitting tribute to the man who would later free South Africa. May his soul rest in peace.
