A dark cloud looms

The debate in the Upper House on  expunging Clause 34 was more acrimonious than warranted and accusations abounded where cold reason demanded surgical retroactive repeal.

The AG must be commended for his resolve in which he rebutted the alternatives that were advanced. Collective responsibility was clear and admitted though the opportunists could not resist conspiracy theories.

It seems if there were indeed a conspiracy rather than a bungle, the entire Parliament and all parties including the Independent Senators were suspect.

The DPP must also be commended for his fearless directions and for my own part, the protestations of poor criminals whose expectations were briefly lifted do not cancel crimes against the society — a distinction made by the AG that is telling.

The snarling of the COP is self-destructive and not in the spirit of partisanship where its own role in the debacle cannot be escaped.

The Opposition behaved more responsibly in the vote than some Independent Senators some of whom remained pouting despite the clear imperative we faced.
