A poisoned chalice

Action Jack, our new Minister of National Security, is hell bent on living up to his reputation for getting things done. So he appears to be intent on pushing the envelope — without constitutional authority — with talk about the return of a "sanitised" Flying Squad.

He has also come out publicly very strongly against the 21st Century Policing strategy — getting cops from behind the desks and to the streets.

The problem for Mr Warner is that politicians do not have line authority over the police (thank God!). Only the Commissioner of Police has that power!

So it will be very instructive to see how Jack handles this poisoned chalice that he has been handed. What will he do if the CoP says "no" to his Flying Squad reprise and continues with the 21st Century Initiative? Who will win?
