ToolsAlcohol fuelling road carnageOnce again our society is traumatised with another gruesome road accident. Once again, those in authority show concern and call for citizens to obey the traffic laws. Once again we are going to spend millions of dollars to run some obscure programme to appease public outrage. Once again we will evade the root of the problem. The root of the problem is alcohol. This is a problem that many people evade by talking about some driver trying to get away from a bad drive; losing control of the vehicle; or with speeding. Alcohol is the catalyst for losing control of a vehicle and speed. Until we become serious about the real cause of most fatal accidents, we will be living in a state of delusion. The common factor in most fatal accidents is alcohol and it is the consumption of alcohol that must be targeted. The right of citizens who wish to drink alcohol must be respected, but laws must be enacted to safeguard the lives of others as a consequence of this. There must be laws that ban the consumption of alcohol in all open public spaces, such as at the river, the beach, on the roadway at weddings, etc. Alcohol must be consumed in an enclosed environment, away from the public view. If strict enforcement of such laws is implemented, I am sure it will go a long way in curbing the frequent carnage on our roads associated with our weekends and public holidays.
