Athletes setting the bar too low

Why is it that our sportsmen and sportswomen do not have that “killer instinct” in them to always go for the gold? They seem to be only satisfied with winning once or just happy to get a silver or a bronze.
In the recently concluded Commonwealth Games, Grenada with one gold was ahead of Trinidad and Tobago which had eight medals—because not one of these eight was gold. That is also Kirani James’ second gold medal in a big international sporting event. Look at Usain Bolt—he is already looking to lower the time for the 200M to under 19 sec.
The Commonwealth Games do not include big countries like the US, China, Russia—so competition for T&T was not as strong—yet we couldn’t achieve gold.
