Calypso Monarch show needs overhaul

I hate being critical at this time. It is almost 1.30 a.m. on Friday morning. I can't believe that I willingly subjected myself to such torture. Let's face it, the Calypso Monarch Final was a terrible show and competition.

The show was too long….three hours should be sufficient. To me there were only about five artistes who should have been allowed to compete at this level…and that is being generous.

Calypso needs better efforts from songwriters or maybe the standard needs to be raised. I think we should realise that this is a competition, not a variety show.

Maybe the problem lies with the judging as well. There should be no more than 20 calypsonians selected for the semi-finals and six for the finals. And the participants should sing two songs for the semis.

Some of these artistes should not even be in the finals. I was impressed by Kurt Allen and Heather McIntosh, they should find favour with the judges…

My other complaints: the sound was mediocre, the band sounded too loud at times, the lighting could have used some creativity. There was too much reliance on ill-chosen props which passed for presentation. Maybe the judges should deduct points for the misuse of props.

And who was the production manager for this disaster…was there even one? Come on….NCC, TUCO, Ministry of Multiculturalism…we can do much better. Maybe I'm not "Trini to de bone" to accept such mediocre presentation of our culture at a time when the world is watching.
