Check roads for more defects

The sudden appearance of a sink hole on the Beetham Highway after several had appeared similarly on the Solomon Hochoy Highway a year or two ago suggests that similar occurrences lie ahead in the future as well.

To avoid serious tragedies, we should undertake a massive highway examination programme using sonar or similar devices to discover potential areas of collapse.

Underground caverns and holes, even water-filled, will give different readings on sonar screens to solid ground.

The cost of such equipment should be affordable.

The ministry is to be commended for calling on contractors at short notice to undertake such emergency repairs as were necessary on the Beetham.

We are indeed fortunate that we have such well-equipped contractors on call.

Such emergencies cannot brook formal procedural requirements which critics will demand in hindsight.
