ToolsDangerous pathIt is indeed a sad day for T&T when the people look on in amazement at the Commission of Enquiry into the events that took place inside the CLICO and HCU empires over the years, but remain powerless. The luxurious lifestyles executives lived (and probably still are living), the milking of policyholders' money, the lies and deceit, the blatant fraud they committed by doctoring the accounts and how not one of them may ever be prosecuted, makes this a sad, sad time for Trinbagonians. These white-collar crimes have affected everyone and will haunt us for years. Now taxpayers must foot the billions that were lost. Were there no financial mechanisms in place to safeguard people's hard-earned cash? How could an auditor admit to "hiding millions of dollars of loss" and not be held accountable? The high flyers are the untouchables in Trinidad and Tobago. We are heading down a dangerous and treacherous path, T&T, and we may not be able recover. Barry Mohammed San Juan |
