Defence Bill needs your support

I am very afraid of the way the crime situation has been hitting our country in all areas. Whenever I read the newspapers, all I see in prominence is the bloodshed and violence that take innocent sons from hard-working mothers, and husbands from dutiful wives. It has even reached to a situation where women and children are being targeted.

It hurts me not just as a citizen but, also, as someone whose parents were robbed and beaten as they were working very hard to earn a living. Nobody knows how hard people work to get anything—the sweat, the tireless nights and the hidden tears. And to know how easily it can all be taken away from you, sometimes, even taken with your life or that of those you love.

There is an urgent need for help and a serious cry for an ear to hear my plea. Let this not continue and may the bloodshed stop. Every night, I pray for all these problems to end, but prayers are simply not enough. Out of all the chaos, the Government comes up with an idea that could seriously put a dent in crime and also act as a deterrent for criminals to move away from this lifestyle.

I know what is at stake here and so, too, does everyone else, but in light of the current situation, it is important for us to act in a manner that safeguards our loved ones from the onslaught of crime as opposed to protecting the ones who can harm us. We must make tough decisions in light of the trying circumstances as we strive to preserve some kind of law and order.

The way I see it, these are not just crimes of passion—they are mere messages to the nation that criminal elements can do what they want and get away with it all. We must show them, if not to gratify ourselves but to set an example for the younger ones that crime is not to be taken lightly.

To the Independent senators who represent the voice of reason and understanding that is untouched by party politics, I implore you to understand where I, like so many others, are coming from. The Defence Bill needs your support urgently. It is the only crime plan that makes sense at this time, and I feel the need to highlight the support given from various entities like the San Fernando Business Association, DOMA (Downtown Owners and Merchants Association) and the rest of the people across the country who are scared for their very lives.

There is no time like the present to show the nation, who depends on you in such high office, that you can do your part in protecting us. In the name of democracy, law and order, I beseech your support on this bill, a new ray of hope for our country.

It is with bated breath and folded arms that we wait to see what happens and ultimately how this country deals with crime.
