Defence Force already pulling its weight

In an attempt to justify the passage of the Defence Amendment Bill 2013, both the Prime Minister and Leader of Government Business are claiming that it is time the country get value for money from the Defence Force, since their budget is about $1 billion per year.

I know that there is a perception that members of the Defence Force are underutilised, but there is nothing further from the truth.

These men and women work very hard and very long hours without overtime, they are on duty 24 hours a day and work more weekends and public holidays than those in most professions do.

So for the Prime Minister and others who should know better (now that they have hands-on information on the operations of the Defence Force) to suggest that they must give value for money being spent, I say to them that these organisations have always given value for money.

And for all those who are in support of this bill, my advice to them is "Be careful what you ask for".
