Duane to the rescueI would like to thank Calypso Monarch Duane O'Connor for reviving the calypso artform. Over the last few years, calypso had become a forum for bitter political attacks and a depressing wail about the fate of our black, fatherless youth. O'Connor's "The Hunt Is On" is a witty, totally entertaining, musical piece that captures the personality of our tireless but colourful character, Ian Alleyne. His second calypso sums up all that is wrong with the artform as it is today. I am relieved and delighted that the judges found him clearly the winner. Let us look forward to next year. Perhaps his success will inspire the other calypsonians, and perhaps the artform will no longer be as divisive as it has become. SB Arnith Via e-mail |
