ToolsFirst-time homeowners need help tooThe Housing Minister has announced that in order to complement the high demand for housing, there will be "land for landless", and this would apply to citizens in the low-income bracket. He further added that existing "squatting communities" would be developed to accommodate, again, the low-income earner. Mr Minister, with all due respect, what about those young couples who have sacrificed all their young lives to educate themselves and are a bit above the classification of "low-income earner"? Are you aware, sir, that they now have to face the banks at high mortgage rates and, in later years, would definitely become "a low-income earner"? Mr Minister, you must also provide relief for those young couples who face the high cost of living like all young people of our land. I would suggest a minimum mortgage rate of at least five per cent interest with Government-affiliated mortgage companies to purchase land and build as they earn. It now costs a minimum of $800,000 to build a decent home, so again, I make the appeal that help in housing must be extended to all our people and not only those in the low-income bracket and the squatting communities.
