Follow the South-Central lead
I have been monitoring the tragic scenario that has unfolded in East Port of Spain over the past few weeks. The people of Nelson and Duncan Streets cried neglect as they claimed that governments have abandoned them for the last 15 years.
I would like to share with all of Trinidad and Tobago where neglect was really shown for the past 50 years.
I am a proud South boy! I have seen three individuals stem from our Southland and became prime ministers: Mr Manning, Mr Panday and Mrs Persad-Bissessar. But it is the first time I have seen a PM from South give back to the people of South and did not do as her predecessors.
When the PNM was in power, like Mr Panday, they neglected the southlands and concentrated in building PoS. Yes, the duty of the PM is to serve all the people of Trinidad and Tobago, but why did our former PMs build PoS and side-line us here in South? Why couldn’t you develop all of us together, PoS, South, Central, East and West?
It is disheartening to hear my friends in Duncan and Nelson Streets making statements that our PM “only building South”. PoS has been the centre page of all governments for the past 50 years, but times have changed and the whole nation needs building, not just one part.
Forgetting the neglect by previous governments, this did not keep people of the South despondent. We worked for less than $69 a day, sent our children to school, paid our rent and elevated ourselves.
Our children have done us proud and though they have degrees, they had to work in groceries and taxis to get a start in life. We stood strong with a vision and a purpose and we help build ourselves.
My brothers and sisters in Duncan Street, Nelson Street and Laventille do not believe that something is always owed to you. It is time you stop blaming others and the government and start making a change in yourself. If South and Central people can rise, even when they were neglected, so too can you.
Do not expect a job to fall at your door step. Get up, and get going. If you want better for yourself and your family stop complaining, stop using crime as an alternative and give your natural talent a chance to shine to make a difference in T&T.
