Foolish laws for a humble herb
CHIEF Justice Ivor Archie’s speech on marijuana has partially restored my confidence in at least one of our eminent jurists.
Alcohol and tobacco are two of the most dangerous drugs on the planet, but are legal and heavily taxed by the state. More people die from their use than any other legal drug.
It is even a fact that more people die from prescription painkillers that all other illegal drugs combined. But marijuana, a humble herb of the earth, has been the victim of laws banning its use by ignorant and careless governments, with thousands jailed and the creation of a massive crime wave as gangs take advantage of it being illegal to make massive profits for themselves.
Marijuana has never killed anyone. It is a drug that not only has been proven to have numerous medicinal properties, but is a calming drug, unlike alcohol which not only kills, but is a depressant.
The faster it is not just decriminalised but legalised, the faster crime will fall, and the police will be able to concentrate on getting the real criminals ... not just the person using a joint for his or her personal use.
Former US presidents George W Bush and Bill Clinton admitted to using it, and in the Caribbean we have a bunch of ignorant people who are still living in the dark ages... probably the same people who oppose condoms.
Thank you for having the courage to speak out CJ Archie.
