It is up to the parentsAs parents, our hearts hurt when we hear of the death of someone's child and we pray for justice because our cries stem from being mothers and fathers ourselves. But one has to balance this concern when our own flesh and blood are hardened street criminals. These criminals prey on the innocent and distress those who are law abiding. They may even prey on their own criminal brethren. What we have to consider as mothers and fathers is, are we doing enough by our children? Are we showing them the way they must go, giving correction where and when it is due? Are we ensuring that they go to school, learn well and most importantly, learn how to interact with others? We are a dying breed if we are falling short in teaching our children the basics before sending them off into the world. We are still blaming the Government because we insist that they have not done enough, but consider this: if we are responsible and accountable for our children, isn't it best for us to work in conjunction with the state to make our communities more viable and strong? Our young men are dying and it has nothing to do with the state; it has something to do with us, the parents. I urge all of you to be mindful of what we teach at home, ensure that our offspring know the difference between the hard right and the easy wrongs. It is only then they will be ready to be substantial products of society. Barry Samuel via e-mail |
