Leave our artistes to entertain and earn

Since Machel Montano was found guilty for his alleged involvement in a matter outside Zen nightclub some five years ago, a number of people including Government ministers have been commenting adversely on him. Even Mr Remy from the union representing TSTT workers drew Machel into their business.

I am not attempting to exonerate him but most of us have made worse mistakes and were not "caught" and found guilty. Our consciences would have found us guilty and condemned us!

Some time ago, Michael "Sugar Aloes" Osuna, who for years sang against anyone who opposed the PNM, had a change of heart and was singing the praises of PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar and her Government. The same applied to The Original de Fosto Himself and Crazy. They were criticised for so doing.

No one is overtly critical of attorneys and other professionals when they work for whichever party or politician, government or opposition. Some even flirt and flit between the opposing sides. They exercise their right to earn their living. Our artistes too must be free to exercise their right to perform for whomever they wish.

One may ask what is the connection between the Machel matter and, say, Aloes.

The condemnation of each is similar and some of the "spewings" seemed to be designed to impact adversely on the earnings of our artistes.
