MPs should set the pace on work hours issue
I am noticing the hollow spin others are putting on the statement delivered by our President on the 0800 hours start time for Parliament.
If we are in agreement that the Parliament should be the exemplar institution for the nation then I would humbly suggest and go one step further and better that of my alma mater compatriot and suggest that a 0700 hours start be implemented as many of our other business entities currently conform. Should our Parliament not be the shining beacon of the new work ethic in our nation?
Is this too much to ask of the representatives? There can be no excuses as that is the nature of the job at hand for those who have decided to take on such noble responsibilities as those of a parliamentarian.
To simply state that an early start will impede the parliamentarians’ ability to treat with their constituents rings hollow as like all other professionals viz doctors/lawyers/dentists etc etc etc all have published hours as to when their clients can see them; similarly a parliamentarian through his office secretary and/or published advertisement can advise his constituents as to when he/she will be in office.
Are parliamentarians not provided with funding for an office, including the engagement of a driver in which event they will be taken to and from their work in comfort and not endure the hardships as the other citizens currently face?
If we are serious about the nation’s business then if the present Government does not adopt such a mechanism when the “lagahoo” government enters office the nation will only then understand and appreciate the meaning of proper governance starting from the top with the Independent Liberal Party leading the nation by example.
