MP for Tunapuna and Minister of Foreign Affairs Winston Dookeran again demonstrated his critical importance to the politics of this glorious nation we call home.
In his debate contribution to the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2014, he made it clear he cannot compromise his vision for the future of politics in our country.
He went on to vote against bill. It might have made more sense to “unbundle” the bill, permitting public consultations on the “run-off” element while allowing parliamentary consent for the very laudable term limitation and recall provisions in it.
Mr Dookeran’s unshakeable loyalty to his principles is remarkable. There is no doubt here his only thought was of the future and the legacy we leave.
In speaking with other citizens of this constituency, all were very impressed to hear how he arrived at this decision. The one common thread here—even for those who admitted they did not support him as candidate in the last election—was overwhelming pride in having an MP who stands for something greater than himself.
The executive of the Tunapuna constituency of the Congress of the People (COP) applauds Mr Dookeran. We stand steadfast in support of him.
