Noise no fun for elderly, animals

This is my plea to the citizens of our country: please be considerate to the elderly community, to persons who are ill and to the animals that share our environment.

We get our eyeful and earful of entertainment, but at what cost? Besides the high cost of fireworks, the lives of scared, innocent animals are tortured. Driven mad by the detonations of fireworks and scratch bombs, some run off to an ugly death, some suffer heart attacks from panic and some cause injury to themselves in their own homes.

Those who are not animal lovers, please, still consider your neighbours' feelings, the effects it may have on your neighbours' health and on their pets, also. Even I struggle with this issue. I would not do anything to make a neighbour feel uncomfortable or uneasy, and I wish they felt the same and understood the repercussions of this activity. I would like to thank the police for issuing a statement about a fine for the illegal use of fireworks.

Remember, other than cats and dogs, there are birds and other animals that suffer from this. Let us learn to be kind, not only to other people but to the animals as well. As Gandhi said, "I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man."
